Mike and Jane are already broken up

(Spoilers for season 5)

Let me just say- I’m open to being wrong. But theres a few moments in volume 1 that really make me consider the state of their relationship.

Exhibit A. This was their reaction to being called “Lovebirds”… theres not much to explain here.

The two of them also only have 1 scene together throughout the entire volume- and its this one. Theres also some strangely phrased dialogue here- like Jane asking Mike “Do you think that could happen for us?” when Mike talks about living happily ever after and stuff. Even if they arent broken up, I’d take this as evidence to support the idea that Jane is conflicted about whether she should be with Mike.

Exhibit B. For some unknown reason, Will Byers thinks that he has a shot.

Something happened in those 18 months to make Will think that Mike might be interested in him! And we know this because this is an entirely different Will than we saw in season 4! He was holding Milkvan together like fucking Hercules. He was their BIGGEST CHEERLEADER!!

Something HAD to have happened to make Will believe there was a chance for them. Especially if he’s talking to Robin about DATING him? Like that almost directly implies that Mike is single?? I mean ofc people are gonna call him HomeWrecker Byers no matter what- but its crazy how we got Mike and Jane being platonic as fuck with a side of Will Byers feeling comfortable OPENLY FLIRTING WITH MIKE??

I would not be surprised if in volume 2 they reveal that Mike and Jane have been broken up for some time. I could see it being a conversation Mike has with Lucas. Because obviously Will already knows.

biggest mileven breakup proof for me is that literally NOBODY in the show likes their relationship. max hates it. hopper hates it. jonathan hates it. dustin thinks theyre annoying. lucas thinks theyre annoying. the only person who actively supports them at this point is will, and thats only because he thinks they're happy together.

no other ship in the show has explicit hate from other main characters (except for maybe stancy). nobody hates lumax. nobody hates jopper. nobody hates jancy. but they all dislike mileven.
