Creature from the Black Lagoon premiered on 12 February 1954 before wider release in March.
Producer William Alland had been working on a concept for movie ever since 1941, when cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa told him about the myth of a race of human-fish creatures living in the Amazon River. Alland thought he could combine the myth with the story of Beauty and the Beast, and in 1952, Maurice Zimm wrote a film treatment based on Alland's idea. Harry Essex and Arthur Ross would receive credit for the final screenplay.
The film was shot in 3D, but by the time the film was released, the 3D craze had already peaked and most audiences saw the 2D ("flat") version.
Millicent Patrick designed the outfit for the creature (known as "Gill-man"), but did not receive credit due to make-up artist Bud Westmore deliberately obscuring her involvement.
Creature from the Black Lagoon spawned 2 direct sequels (1955's Revenge of the Creature and 1956's The Creature Walks Among Us), and the Gill-man made numerous appearances in movies and television. Remakes were announced in 1982 (John Landis), 1992 (John Carpenter), 1996 (Ivan Reitman), 2001 (Gary Ross, whose father had co-written the original screenplay), and 2002 with Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro's vision was rejected by Universal and he turned it into The Shape of Water (2017), which was a box office success and was nominated for 13 Academy Awards. It received Best Picture, Best Director, Best Production Design, and Best Score Oscars. Other remakes have been proposed as recently as 2020.
