i finished watching wake up dead man and it’s legitimately one of my new top 3 favorite movies. i already knew it’d love it bc i loved the previous knives out installment but WOW…
i was already tearing up by the end just bc of how beautiful the movie was, both in visuals AND story but then we got the “where are they now” segment about simone and i lost it.
i’m hypermobile which means i also experience chronic pain, when i stated the movie i was complaining about my wrist hurting, halfway through i had to put on some kt tape to hopefully make it better. seeing her be able to live a happy life filled with passion, not with a magical cure, but by enduring the pain, meant a LOT to me.
“and some got their miracle. not being cured or fixed, but finding the sustaining power to wake up every day and do what we’re here to do in spite of the pain. daily bread.”
i will try my damned hardest to live my best life happy, like simone. in spite of the pain.
The canary statement in the first episode of TMAGP really reminds me of the role that the angler fish episode played in TMA. The angler fish served as the first warning and was in it of itself descriptive of its role; the statement was the lure, and the trap. It was its own warning of what was to come. The canary statement reminds me of the saying "canary in a coal mine" from when miners would bring canararies down into the mines to warn them of when oxygen became too low. The bird would run out of oxygen and stop singing, likely dying. Red Canary went underground and "sang" about what they found until it killed/injured them. They are the first warning and died as a sort of warning to others- to get above ground, to get away while it was still possible. Both statements are a warning and a descriptor of what's to come.
the hardest part of the chronic brain fog of unmedicated depression (and an unbalanced chemical soup of other disorders we don't have time to get into rn) is deciding you want to be a writer
it takes twice as long to get all my thoughts in order and even longer to get them to coherently come together to form into a story that portrays the correct emotion and flow i'm aiming for
and i worry so deeply that all my efforts have been in vein, that just because it makes sense in my head doesn't necessarily mean it'll come across correctly to everyone else, i have the bias of the additional context that only exists in my own head - did i describe a scene or an arc well enough that includes the unwritten context that'll translate correctly to the reader ? i truly don't know all the time if it does
but to hear even just one person say it did, the message came across, my vision has been received clearly, really makes a whole world of difference
and to have triple digits of comments all saying they like what i wrote and it moved a lot of them to tears is really very validating
so from a mentally ill writer who sometimes genuinely cannot tell if my efforts have paid off, thank you for affirming that they have <3
mac.. my spouse..
its that time of day (1:30am) where i want people to see my writing again lmao i always get so tempted to just advertise the shit out of the otherlands at this hour even though its literally just scripts
like its a fun concept!! but also screenplay / entire group of screenplays written by One Person is not exactly the realest media format
being in brisbane on the night of the election is fucking fantastic. a friend and i got celebratory drinks. i highfived a random lady in the street. a group of drunk guys walked past singing. dutton literally lost his electorate seat and has to be replaced as head of the LNP i feel so hopeful about australias political future
"We should bring back queerbaiting" No, most of the instances this website have decided are "queerbaiting" are *subtext*, what you want is *subtext* which is something deliberately built by writers and all the other creatives involved in shaping and producing a piece of media whether you believe it was "that deep" or not and requires more than 2.5 eight-episode seasons where the goal is to grind everything into as much money as possible and also requires viewers to pick up on the things that are actually in the source material and also requires a fan base willing to engage with it on more than a surface level.
You're craving layered media and widespread media literacy but that's being killed by engagement algorithms and genAI.
