But let's face it being gay in russia is shit. If you want to protest or fight for your right, the government knows your name and being out in Russia is dangerous. In most cases you can't even protest. Crimes against queer people are never investigated. The gov outlawed being gay and people are extremely conservative. There's an AIDS epidemic and now in Chechnya there are prison camps. Putin knows and he won't do shit about it and Kadyrov will continue committing these crimes

you’re right nonny, being gay is shit here. 10 years ago the picture was very different. but it’s not dangerous everywhere. during my school years I’ve been studying with an open transgender and some queer people, then in university there were plenty of gay guys. one of them was coming to the uni in women’s heels and nobody beat him up for that as one could imagine. it’s all relative. but of course, most of the things you said are true, especially in concerned about hiv epidemic level.gay pride is impossible, because the local power holders won’t do something against the anti-gay propaganda and homophobic society. the governors, even if they’re gay themselves are scared to lose their places and ratings. if we’re talking about why society is getting more homophobic on a federal level, it’s also because of that good old vendetta between west and east. news programs and tv shows are telling russian people that the west is rotten with their ‘values’ mocking every deviation that is normalized in Europe and USA and opposing our county to them. good thing everyone is getting fed up with that already, as I heard propaganda channels are having low ratings now. how I wish for the cold war to be finally over *sigh* but then again. honestly, me - i don’t blame personally putin on all that. for 17 years I’ve learned to understand his persona. he often says that democracy is a power of majority ( not a power of people as one would say) and he does stuff according to that definition. so when that orthodox-obsessed shithead from the saint-petersburg parliament milonov proposed the anti-gay law and the majority of parliament agreed on that, and THEN the nation was fine with that - putin signed it up. I’m not whitewashing him he’s done plenty of other bad stuff, but in order to fight the system we must understand how it works. the lawmaker who was crazy about christianity was trying to push his interests and please the homophobic majority. then it all rolled like a snowball - more and more. if we wanna resist we should start from the origins of homophobia. like stephen fry did - he was actually going to russia to talk with milonov and make him change his idiotic mind. sorry i talk a lot
