Monday in Milwaukee Junction
This spaceship-looking building in historic Milwaukee-Junction was built in 1971 as the then-new Stanley's Mannia Café. Stanley Hong came to Detroit in the 1930s from China's Canton Province, now known as Guangdong, working for a Chinese restaurant located in the Black Bottom area. Beginning in 1940, Mr. Hong would go into business on his own, starting with the original Mannia Café, once located at 565 East Canfield and Hastings Street (demolished for Detroit Medical Center expansion). The new Stanley's Mannia Café came next and became among the city's most popular restaurants, frequently by many of Detroit's entertainment and political elite, particularly in the African-American community. Hong also operated Stanley's Other Place, located at 2411 West 8 Mile Road, which opened in 1978 and closed in 2014. The structure was designed by Nathan Johnson & Associates, headed by pioneering Detroit-based African-American architect, Nathan Johnson. It is an example of Googie architecture, which gets its name from a long gone coffeehouse in West Hollywood, designed by John Lautner, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright. In the early 1990s, Stanley's became "the original epicenter of the rap music club scene in the early '90s in Detroit.", according to Paul Rosenberg, Detroit native and music executive, when another Detroiter, Maurice Malone, a clothing designer, founded Rhythm Kitchen, a weekly underground night that became a platform for many up-and-coming artists in Detroit hip-hop, including a young Marshall Mathers. Stanley's Mannia Café closed in 1995 and later served two stints as a church - Omega Baptist and Grace Fellowship Baptist - before closing for good. Despite being vacant, the structure was recently designated a local historic district by the City of Detroit, a testament to its importance on a multitude of levels. #Detroit #MilwaukeeJunction #Googie #GoogieArchitecture #Modernism #NathanJohnsonandAssociates #archi_ologie #deserve2preserve #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces #GalaxyS10 #withGalaxy (at Milwaukee Junction, Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxKx7IcA1-2/?igshid=e5yey2r4xm53

“RISE UP”
by MEGGS
In the late 1800s the railroad junctions of Detroit’s Milwaukee Junction neighborhood proved an ideal location for the formation of a major manufacturing hub and soon became an instrumental part of the automobile industry. BBandM reports that this Russell Street site is now home to one of the city’s best collections of urban art, and was on hand in 2014 to watch Australian artist David Hooke, aka Meggs, paint this four story, 6,000 sq. ft. factory wall. Working remarkably fast for a wall this size, and with limited access from a mobile lift, Meggs completed the wall in 10 days. Here’s how he described his finished piece: “an iconic symbol of the city and past glory for over a century, it is now a symbol of future hope; to rise up against great odds.” @houseofmeggs
A lovely trip to the post office in Milwaukee Junction. 10/18/23

Hard to believe that I had never taken the tour of the historic Ford Piquette Avenue Plant before, but yesterday I finally checked it off my list. Anyone who appreciates Henry Ford and the history of Ford Motor Company, automotive history, Detroit history, etc., this is the tour for you. The Piquette Plant, designed by Field, Hinchman & Smith, an offshoot of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, and built in 1904, was the first property owned by Mr. Ford himself. Some of the most revolutionary automobiles of the day came out of this little New England mill-style building, most notably the game-changing Model T, one of the 20th century's greatest achievements. Visitors from around the globe come to see the place that put the world on wheels. Definitely one of the most significant cultural heritage sites not only in the United States, but the world. #Detroit #MilwaukeeJunction #MillStyle #IndustrialArchitecture #HenryFord #FordMotorCompany #SmithHinchmanandGrylls #PiquetteAvenue #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #IGersDetroit #detroit_igers #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SceneFromDetroit #ThisDetroitLife #GalaxyS8 #withGalaxy #ShotFromTheGalaxy (at Ford Piquette Avenue Plant)
This spaceship-like building on East Baltimore was built in 1968 as the then-new location of Stanley's Mannia Café. Stanley Hong had been serving up some of the city's best Chinese-American cuisine since 1940. The building last functioned as a church before closing a few years ago. Given the reinvention of the area, I'm hopeful some intrepid individual(s) will see the value in this unique piece of Detroit real estate. #Detroit #NorthEnd #MilwaukeeJunction #NewCenter #Modernism #archi_ologie #MidModMondays #deserve2preserve #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #TheMidwestival #IGersDetroit #IGersMidwest #detroit_igers #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Milwaukee Junction, Detroit)
