Why Season 0 Kaiba had Green Hair

(NOTE: This headcanon straddles elements of the anime and manga canons—as such, there may be elements that don't sit perfectly within one timeline or another.)

Gozaburō and Noah were both naturally green-haired, with Gozaburō going grey in his early 20s under work stress. The black portions visible in-series were all worked through with dye—wishing not to be perceived as old (and hence King Lear-adjacent), Gozaburō did his damndest to conceal the loss of colour. Seto and Mokuba, meanwhile, are both naturally black-haired. When the old tyrant died, Seto felt an inexorable sense of loss—he had wasted any chances he'd had of connecting to his adoptive family, leaving him locked away from late stepbrother and stepfather alike. To worsen things, Kaiba had absolutely no intention of engaging with his emotions—feeling means vulnerability, after all. Hence, he didn't know how to grieve. Dying his hair green was his odd way of mourning: After all, he was becoming the lost whom he could never love. It wasn't helpful—a certain agony filled Seto each time he peered in the mirror, but he wouldn't dare acknowledge any pain he felt. He was fine, absolutely fine, wasn't he?

Following the Experience of Death, Seto became frantic. At the peak of his mid Death-T denial, his obsessiveness was such that he put more and more green through the roots each morning, disgusted with every millimetre of black that would come through. He could not bear to see himself for himself—to this day, integrity makes his heart slow to a terrible, sparse rate. Yet upon being Mind Crushed, Seto did gain sufficient self-insight to admit to himself that emulating Noah and Gozaburō would not fill the void they left, nor subsume his guilt over that latter's death. As such, one of the first things he did upon arriving home from hospital was remove all traces of former family from his hair, dying it brown for distance's sake.

Did You Know?

Konami made a Mind Crush card.

This card is named after Yami Yugi's Mind Crush ability in the anime, but the card seems to take more inspiration from Yami's Penalty Game illusions in the manga, which the anime's Mind Crush is based on. The detail that supports this claim is the shattering puzzle piece motif in the card's artwork, which is a spot-on replication of the shattering pieces of Seto Kaiba's "heart" in his second Penalty Game in the manga.

During my research, I discovered this card actually does appear in part 6 of the TV anime.
