“i can’t believe you’re reading a potions mag right now.” - sirius black to remus lupin, gryffindor common room, december 1976 (image source).
a musing on remus lupin’s middle name.
John — and perhaps this is my own metaphorical hang ups coming to light — represents everything Remus wishes he could be. It’s such a mundane, muggle name, with none of the oddity that Remus carries, none of the stigma he feels acutely in his stomach when ‘Lupin’ is uttered across a classroom. Johns sit by themselves in corner coffee shops with the newspaper splayed atop the table recklessly and worry about the weather on the way to work. Johns have problems like when to call that bird they met down at the bar on Tuesday and keeping a bachelor flat from looking like a meth addict’s latest residence without help from mum. Johns don’t worry about murdering their best friends in cold blood, don’t contemplate the intimate importance of making peace with God, don’t allow themselves to get shitfaced alone on old firewhiskey after their mates have first dates.
