According to an online block renderer, tall grass in Minecraft looks like this:
The site is pretty inaccurate on this one model in particular, but "Tall Grass" is indeed a cross. I had a sight of text that pointed something out one day, and when it said the grass made Beta ugly I realized I agreed.
Changing Tall Grass to use an orthogonal model - the "Crops" one - is one of the first things I did when modding Minecraft Beta.
