Why Minecraft Keeps Getting Worse: More Results of Monopoly
I was a heavy Minecraft user up until Minecraft 1.8. I didn’t stop because I became an adult. I already was an adult, and was playing on MisfitMC, a “mature survival” server. The first thing that went wrong is 1.8 API changes which broke the marketplace. Luanti automatically downloads mods when you join a server. Since they are open source Lua scripts, anyone can fix them–you don’t have to…
Left - my creation in Luanti (Minetest), right - my inspiration in sulsulmelli's Sims house.
Interview with a Mod: Edna123
I was somewhat nervous; as I walked up to The Free Things Factory for the very first Interview of the first Server Newspaper to ever serve Tunneler's Abyss. I took a deep breath, and told myself to just relax. Edna123 had always been super nice to me and a joy to work with, even during troubled times.
The Factory was vast, with ceilings so high they were shrouded in darkness. They had frescoes of the people who had help build the place so huge, the artisans of Aragornath would've been impressed.
“Hello?” I called into the grand hall.
“Hello!” came a return greeting.
Once myself and Edna had found each other, we headed to my studio where we could have a cozy chat.
Lady Elk: Greetings Edna. Thank you for making time for our interview.
Edna123: Thank you for inviting me, I'm honored to be your first guest!
LE: Mod Edna, I am sure our readers would love to know how a rising star such as yourself started out on Tunnelers Abyss. How did you get your start on the server?
E123: When I was first starting on TA, I mostly just teleported around on various other players' travelnets, going to old mines to get ores and leveling up my pickaxes over time. My first "base" was a 2x2 horizontal tunnel through a hill in the Tunnelers' Outback. After a little while there I moved to a forest on one of nakama's travelnets and built my first house. When I finished that house was when Hume2 (now Hypernoot) promoted me to Regular.
LE: What events led up to your being chosen as mod? Was there an interview process you can describe?
E123: I honestly don't really know what led up to the admins deciding to promote me. CalebJ just kind of asked me if I was interested in being a moderator one night and mentioned that he and the other admins had discussed the promotion. Maybe in a future interview you could ask one of the admins about their procedure for promotions :)
LE: That sounds very mysterious. I suppose I will if such a thing were to ever happen to me. How long have you been mod now? Have things changed since the days when you first joined the server?
E123: I have been a mod for about ten months now, having been promoted mid-December 2024. Some changes that come to mind (since I first joined in late 2022) are:
1: Doggo's roleplay kingdom, Ercavica, has been inactive for a long time now, it used to be one of the highlights of the server :/
2: At least two major technological nerfs occurred during my time here: Reproducible uranium and sand (using chernobylite) was removed; and node breakers stopped being able to use super grow staffs
3: Paint, Spleef, and Superquests were all added to the server, also cars were changed to be able to fit more than one player at a time. The server billboard seems to have come and gone as well.
LE: The server billboard? That sounds very interesting! What was it, and how did it work?
E123: The server billboard was a block (and a menu in the inventory) where players could pay 5AB to post a decently sized message with a title. Basically like an inventory UI of posters any players could add on to.
I'm not sure why it was removed, it was quite nice. The billboard blocks were replaced by chalkboard blocks I think.
LE: I see. That was definitely a nerf in the communication department. Do you have any thoughts about how much more diversified the server has become?
E123: I think the community of Tunnelers' Abyss has always been pretty diverse, with many different people of many different nationalities all contributing to the server throughout its history. It's always good to see old players return after a long absence; and it's always nice to see new players integrate and share in the server community.
LE: Let's talk about accomplishments. What is the build you are must proud of?
E123: Most of my builds are incomplete in some form, so my options for this question are limited... One finished build that I still like several years after its completion is my re-creation of M.C. Escher's "Relativity," one of his most famous works.
However, the build that I've worked hardest and longest on would probably be my Free Things Factory, though it is still very much unfinished.
LE: Can you tell us its story? What made you decide to build it, and how long did it take?
E123: I don't actually remember when I first decided to build a free things factory. It was a couple months after I had settled into the server, I was discovering all these interesting ways to automatically produce things.
LE: {nods} That sounds round about the same timeline as it was for me when I was inspired to start building a free area.
E123: I thought that a factory that produced free items for players would be the best way to use those machines, so I started working on it around early summer 2023. It took a very long time to get to full working order though, so, if I remember correctly, it was around mid-to-late 2024 by the time it was actually giving away free items.
E123: The building itself is unfinished at the moment, the exterior still being roofless and the mountainside looking kind of dumpy. The inside, though, especially the factory entrance and most of the factory floor, is almost complete. Only a few pillars here and there need to be finished, and of course the walls, which house portraits of various players who have helped the factory throughout its construction, are not filled in yet.
LE: Oh, a gallery of portraits of people who helped build your factory? That sounds Epic. I will have to come down a photograph them for the paper when they are complete!
LE: Mod Edna, I know a mods life is not all buildings and praise. What are some of the pitfalls of being a sought after mod like you?
E123: I don't really know what you mean. I have quite enjoyed being able to help players on the server, to the extent I can. If there is one pitfall, it would be that sometimes I can't help people who need it, if the help they require is something only admins or long-time moderators can do
LE: What was the most challenging event in your Mod career?
E123: The most challenging for me specifically was probably one incident with several accidental car swaps. For context, normal driftcars (this was before tanks or supercars) are 300AB, so not exactly cheap for most players. It was just a few days after I was promoted, and the driftcar mod had been updated so that cars could fit multiple players. There was an impromptu celebration and races at spawn, and a new player ("player1" I'll call them), who often had trouble communicating clearly, had borrowed my car for the event, after asking for one. At the end of the event, however, they were refusing to give me my car back, so I teleported them into a room so they couldn't run away, basically forcing them to give me my car back. The problem was, player1 had already owned a car (given to them days before), and had thrown it, for some reason, during the racing. That's why they were asking around for a car. Another Regular player ("player2") had picked it up and kept it, not knowing where it came from. So player1 thought that I had stolen their car, and I thought that player1 had stolen my car. I received a /mail from one of the admins implying (in my interpretation at the time) that player2 had been the one who stole my car. I took it upon myself to try to get my car back from player2, but only ended up making the situation even worse by interrogating player2 for a long time, even though they hadn't stolen my car at all. Eventually one of the admins stepped in and reasoned out what had actually happened, but the incident was certainly not fun for any of the parties involved, and I was discomfited by how badly I had handled the situation
LE: How does that compare with this most recent Tower Incident?
E123: I don't really know much about the "Tower Incident," since I think I was still away from the server when it happened, and only returned right around the time the greenhouse griefing was being handled by the admins. From the little I know, that incident *seemed* to be about players griefing each others builds, apparently in response to previous offenses. That description is, of course, just what I've heard, I may be incorrect about it. In comparison to griefing and player feuds, the car incident just seems like an expensive misunderstanding that got out of hand.
LE: So what do you think of Hypernoot? Do you think he is a good Owner and Admin?
E123: I think Hypernoot is a good owner, he is very present for his server, unlike some other servers I've seen. He has qualities that make him good for the job: he is amiable and fun, but isn't afraid to enforce the rules of the server when he needs to
LE: Have you ever seen him, (and if so is he handsome?)
E123: No, I have never (that I know 0_0) seen another player from Tunnelers' Abyss irl. I don't think even the admins have met each other in person, I think they only got together online, though that process would be interesting to read about in a future interview =)
LE: What is your opinion of and advice to people who are not satisfied with the way Hypernoot handles disputes on the server and so continuously gossip about settled incidents?
E123: I don't know if I can make an opinion of such an undefined group of people. For advice, though, I would suggest to whomever is not satisfied that they can take the issue up with Hypernoot (or more broadly any staff member) personally if they have a problem with his handling of situations. Incident/drama gossip is just something players like to talk about on this server though, since most of the time the server is quite peaceful and relatively quiet. I don't think the gossip is often directly related to how particular staff members have dealt with something, but maybe I am just not gossipy enough to be in on the conspiracy :D
