Unwanted gifts
Being a minimalistic, zero waste-y parent comes with its challenges. Today we had J's dad over for dinner. He brought 4 stuffed animals for the boys. Two of each. So now we have two identical, very big snakes and two identical weird dogs lying on the floor. He's not the type to think about materials or production of the stuff and it's just excessive to bring 7-week-old Tiny two stuffed animals larger than he is. Gifts are just hard. We'll have Tiny's christening in November, Bubba's birthday is in December and then comes Christmas. We try to make smart wishlists with plenty of details and suggestions as to where the things can be bought because we know that people will not find these things in regular stores. It's stuff like natural rubber bath toys, stainless steel water bottles, clothes in wool/silk/bamboo blends and cloth diapers. The problem is that people don't use the lists - even the people who ask for a list. It is beyond frustrating to have specifically said that we DO NOT need clothes for Tiny and to then receive several sets of clothes anyway.
We know and acknowledge that gifts come from a good place and we are grateful to have so many people around us who love us and our boys. But really, these gifts that we don't need, what do we do with them? We have no appropriate charities around to give them to so they'll be given to the thrift store. A shame! J's dad could have spent his money on so many other things that would've brought us joy, or he could have spent no money and not brought gifts on a random Thursday.
