#tbt 'I miss trail running edition.' From my Strava log (Jan 15, 2020) <pre-pandemic>: "Van Cortlandt -> Fieldston -> Riverdale -> Riverdale Park -> Spuyten Duyvil -> Inwood -> Inwood Hill Park -> Marble Hill -> Kingsbridge -> Van Cortlandt. I enjoyed the 52°F afternoon and went out on an adventure run into Manhattan and back over the Henry Hudson Bridge walkway (which reopened in November) into Inwood Hill Park. The trails on this run were tough, especially for my first visit to Inwood Hill. A lot of Hawks (I am guessing Falcons) there, squawking at each other. I saw one fly near me, this being the closest I had ever been to a large predatory bird like that in nature ever! I also saw a Blue Jay chilling in a nearby tree. By the time I got back to the trails in Van Cortlandt, I could feel all of the climbing I had been doing earlier in the run. I had to slow down and power hike the steeper hills on the XC trail and on the Cass Gallagher. When I finished on the flats, I slowed to a jog, my legs feeling the burn of a fun, challenging run on an unseasonably warm January afternoon. I kept a mindful awareness today, making sure to relax and focus on the breath. I would catch myself tensing up at times and immediately relaxed. That is a good mentality to practice daily, not just out on a run.
