A mining bee (Andrena sp.) on Pyracantha flowers. A dismal and neglected shrub on my property for many long years. I decided to give it a bit of fertilizer this spring. As a result, instead of putting on five flowers it put on 500,000. The bee party has been amazing. Taking pictures has been a little like catching fish in a barrel. Mining bee on pear blossoms. Many people think honeybees do the heavy lifting for orchard pollination, but in all my days observing pear trees I’ve found honeybees are rarely present. So who takes care of the pears? The native solitary bees, that’s who.
