“The concept of what is respectful is completely relative to cultures and individuals. There are certain expectations to conform to standards, but there should be room for unorthodox ways of honoring or paying tribute. I’ve always had a need to have a tangible physical part of my pets after they died. That’s a deep human need and desire across cultures, to keep a memento, either animal or human.”

For Throwback Thursday ~

An oldie but goodie from 16 years ago; a taxidermy sculpture of mine titled Northwoods Chimera. This piece made its debut at the world’s very first rogue taxidermy art exhibition, an event orchestrated in Minneapolis by two colleagues and myself in 2004. Over the years a skewed perception of what constitutes rogue taxidermy has developed because of the way it has been pigeonholed by yellow press. Rogue taxidermy is a multifaceted genre that arose from fine art mixed media sculpture, not from the world of traditional taxidermy. Rogue taxidermy is not merely defined as fictional animal hybrids or anthropomorphic mounts. It's not necessarily created with tanned animal hides, it can be constructed entirely from synthetic materials or animal bones. Nor is the end result required to be a realistic representation of an animal's body, it can be abstract. The genre encompasses everything from small decorative objects to room-sized installations, and conceptual art to wearable art.
