Coming up with a warrior cat au to add more genetic diversity into the clans… Dewnose/as a MinnowMouse kit. Minnowtail has a litter of three (Havenpelt, Heronwing and Dewnose) away from RiverClan camp and brings them to meet Mousewhisker in secret. In the moons after the dark forest battle, they’re both still dubiously trusted by their Clanmates, so neither wants to take the risk by coming out as in a half-Clan relationship. Mousewhisker takes the kit that looks the most like him (Dewkit) so Minnowtail can avoid suspicion.
They both bring their kits back to their camps after the first and last time United as a family. Havenpelt and Heronwing look enough like their mother that RiverClan, although giving the side eye, looks the other way. They need new warriors to replace the fallen. And they won’t make the same mistake that wrought one particular cat’s wrath upon their Clan.
Mousewhisker meanwhile is at a loss for what to do. He’s no idiot, he saw what happened when Leafpool’s secret was revealed, and Bramblestar and Squirrelflight’s relationship fell apart. Even if they were mending it, Mousewhisker couldn’t ensure a happy ending for his family.
So he brings this small, gray and white kitten that could not possibly pass as anything other than his own son, and he beckons Squirrelflight to speak in private. She’s a new deputy, and she’s trying to be there for all of her Clanmates. Even the ones who trained with the same cat who killed her father and daughter. But who else would understand?
He explains that this kitten is his, and Minnowtail’s too. He explains that they agreed to each take whatever kittens looked like them the most to their Clans. Minnowtail would claim them as hers, and leave the father a mystery. Mousewhisker would as well- but he can’t.
He regrets breaking with Minnowtail’s and his plans almost immediately- they planned to mutually never tell their kits. It seems like a foolish idea in the presence of a cat who suffered so much from that same plan.
But squirrelflight is understanding. She tells him the kit’s mother will not be disclosed to anyone aside from Bramblestar. And so the kits are raised, in different Clans, not knowing truly, who their father/mother is, but that’s the least of their problems when their present parent was a dark forest trainee.
When Darktail invades RiverClan, and Heronwing is killed, and suddenly the rest of his family is sheltering in ThunderClan, Mousewhisker can’t do it anymore. He tells his surviving kits. It goes…. not terribly, but not a happy ending. Dewnose feels little connection to Minnowtail having himself been nursed by Daisy, and Havenpelt is decidedly apathetic. She just wants to live normally. But her brother is dead and her Clan has been taken over by an egomaniac.
Life continues on. Dewnose has kittens with Sorrelstripe. It’s less of a romantic thing and more of a transaction. Sorrelstripe wanted kits, Dewnose and her were friends. He makes sure they both know who he is to them, even if he can’t bring himself to be as involved as his brother in law is with his kits.
Havenpelt’s life stabilizes when she and Sneezecloud strike up a friendship, and eventually a romance. She has two kittens, and she feels normal.
Not many seasons later, and one of those kittens is transforming into the kind of monster his grandparents were tricked into training for.
