I’m writing a happy scene in a functional family, where the parents treat their kids well and everyone genuinely likes and loves each other, and it’s making me cry.

I wrote a big, complicated family where some of the members are polyamorous into my novel, so now I have constructions like “my wife’s sister’s boyfriend’s queerplatonic partner”.

You know how sometimes kids get all squirmy when they read sex or romance in a book?

I’m like that, but I’m writing the book.

Me, squinting at my novel: how can I make it even more queer?

I finished the first draft of my novel!

Me: “So this character is mildly depressed...”

PMC: “Mildly? She talks about how terrible everything is in every scene!”

Me: “Oh, she reads as severely depressed, doesn’t she?”

Problem: I don’t know how to write neurotypical characters.

Solution: All my characters are fucking crazy.
