Is it just me or do a lot of conversations about minor coded characters have a lot of accidental racist and body shaming undertones?
(Sorry for the stupid measurements I’m American just bare with me)
“Like a big bust on a short character is fetishizing minors” I have 3 friends under 5’5 who have D cups or over. They’re adults now and still that short. When they had bust that size under 18, they’re bodies weren’t inherently sexual. Large bust aren’t inherently sexual.
“Using height as main evidenced that a character is a minor.” This one is is just stupid. I’m 18 I’m 5’0. My mom is in her 50s and she’s the same height. My aunt is in her 40s and is 4’10. We’re all latina and on average are shorter just like how on average asians are shorter. Not all characters especially not all ANIME CHARACTERS FROM JAPAN are going to be based on the average caucasian heights. Not to mention not every white adult is going to be like 5’7.
“The character isn’t shown drinking alcohol or having sex” 👁👄👁 not body shaming or racist I just- what? I know it isn’t a common one but I have seen it and I just have to say w h a t? I guess yoda is a minor.
“I know this character is canonically an adult or it makes the most sense for them to be an adult in context. But they’re petite and cute so they’re a child.” I have seen whole essays that essentially some up to this sentence. Me and all the other women in my family have always been perceived as younger than we are and that’s fine. But “looking like a child” does not give you an excuse to infantilize a character that is or likely is an adult. Treating people with a different level or respect due to their body is bad and I don’t believe I have to explain this to people.
NOTE: this post is NOT about characters that canonically have the body of a child but are immortal or a species that ages very slow. This is not 6000 year old toddler this is about, “could be anywhere from 17-23 but we’re not sure/has a babyface/has the audacity to be short.”. There are characters that are probably teens that have unconfirmed ages, but please actually use context clues instead of just basing everything on their body type. The way a character acts and the context of their story will tell you their age much more accurately than their looks.
