Would sb with dyslexia be able to join the army, and what would their chances of promotion be? Thanks and Happy Hols!
Typically, no. Dyslexia and dyscalculia are disqualifying conditions. You can get a waiver if you can complete the ASVAB test within the minimum percentile without accommodations, and if you can serve in the military without medication or accomodations. With anything considered a learning disability, to include ADD and autism, you must 1) not have been professionally diagnosed or2) maintain a good life standard sans medication or treatment for at least one yearand3) Haven’t experienced symptoms in over a yearSo they can have dyslexia; they just can’t have dyslexia lol
Having said that, lots of people don’t know they have learning disabilities, and even if they do, they probably don’t have a professional diagnoses, and even if they do, the army’s medical history screening will probably miss it. It’s actually not that thorough. Given that, you can have an active duty soldier with dyslexia, even a high-ranking one, but they’ll be expected to perform without special accommodation and without displaying symptoms, a wretched existence if I may say so, and perhaps not very safe for those around them.
So to answer your question, yes: if they lie. This isn’t that shocking; recruiters tell people to lie on the entry tests all the time because a lot of things can disqualify you from service.
“Have you ever had bronchitis?”
“Yeah, when I was ten or so. Why?”
“On the test, they’re gonna ask if you’ve had bronchitis. You say no. Have you ever used an inhaler?”
“Yeah, they gave me one for the bronchitis.”
“On the test, they’re gonna ask you if you’ve used an inhaler. You say no. Are we clear?”
Recruiters have good incentives to get you to lie on the entry paperwork.
