#MIPSTERZ
Being Muslim could be cool. На странице движения этой субкультуры в Facebook находится очень занятный лозунг: «Wait, they hate us cuz we’re Muslims? I thought they are hated us cuz we were hipsters?”.
Doctors & Engineers, The Kominas, Saraswathi Jones, and more talk to Noisey about resistance, heritage, and Islamophobia.
Moving to Brooklyn
I moved to Brooklyn about four years ago because a part of me felt like it was the only place in America where I could really feel at home and not some alien other. The foreign born population of the city, by itself, would be the second largest city in America. I am surrounded by languages of every hue and variety. I hear calls to prayer and church bells on my way home from work, walk past mandirs and gurduwaras and everything in between. I’ve never had to drive.
I walk, breath the dusty, grimy air and live on pizza and bagels. Life is as perfect as it is flawed. There is a crisis amidst the triumph, a sinking ship of housing, of systemic violence, of all the cruelties and kindnesses of human life made manifest. The space is, partly, part of a larger yearning for community. Much has fallen apart, but much still remains, endures and stands to prosper. Can we make it happen here?
First Post + Say Mashallah
Wait, are we really doing this? That’s amazing. We’re actually coming together to start a community blog. If you aren’t familiar with the Mipsterz, yet, you’re either too cool or not cool enough. Mipsterz is an opt out, community. You need to apply to leave and we’ve lost all the forms.
