The firefly squid lives off the coast of Japan. Most of its life is spent in deep water, but every June they come to the surface of Toyama Bay to breed. They are brilliantly bioluminescent, with hundreds of photophores all over their bodies.

Bioluminescence is an essential aspect of firefly squid existence. They are unique among animals because unlike most squid, they have three detectors in their eyes for shades of blue (cones!). While they can't see the full range of color that we can, they are much better at distinguishing between shades of blue. What are they saying to each other with their blue specificity?
