I wholely believe that after Gilbert finishes medical school in Toronto, he spends at least a summer, if not an entire year, living with the Miqmak and studying natural healing with the medicine woman. Because if humanity as a species is going to evolve and improve, we need to "use nature to be on the winning side if medicine."

And if he and Anne are married by then, then if course she goes with him, embracing the culture and learning everything she can from them, to inspire her writing in the future.
