Woke up this morning thinking about how the one thing i will never get back is that specific scent i felt when visiting my grandparents homes.
Those places belong to someone else now. I will never experience that scent and place ever again.

Woke up this morning thinking about how the one thing i will never get back is that specific scent i felt when visiting my grandparents homes.
Those places belong to someone else now. I will never experience that scent and place ever again.
I feel like the main difference between when i was young versus when im now mid 30’s, is that up til my early 20s i had more things culturally in common with people younger than me.
But now i have way more things in common with people older than me. And by that i mean like ppl 10-15 years older than me.
i hate how so many storage solutions at ikea are almost always designed for the kallax system. Like. I really dont like kallax. Like i cant imagine a shelf system that is lacking so much character and style as the fucking kallax. It;s not even ugly it is just so incredibly default. If “idk what to have for dinner” was a furniture it would be a kallax. Like as a swede, you can like make your home look varied with stuff from different sources but the moment you have a kallax shelf your whole room is now an Ikea room. Like boom sorry its all ikea now.
We are doing some sort of self-leadership course at my job rn. And ngl, for some years now i believed that my adhd had like… improved you know? Because i am pretty ok at my job wrt focus and paying attention. Because i rly enjoy my job.
But this course we are taking is literally just reverting me back to my unmedicated elementary school self. Im trying so hard to read the digital material and it just does not fkn stick. I havent needed to re-read a text over and over like this for a decade.
I rly dont like the course because it is very… neurotypically self-help-vague-ass-live-laugh-love-esque. It has that “if you feel stressed, try hydrating yourself and do some breathing !”The text does contain some interesting and useful information but 62% of the rest is just buzzwords and filler text and SO MANY “according to research” with ZERO SOURCES. And i just got so peeved at how the digital course was written that i just can NOT absorb and remember most of it. Like its as if my adhd just went “we do not need this :)” and it was just so unexpectedly difficult to get through the material.
Like if anything i have learned from this, is that if im in a work environment that suits me, my adhd does get a bit more cooperative. Like if i had to work w smth like this course as a job i would like. I would scream. I would scream and then quit.
hey so if you are going for water mixable oils, assuming the winstor & newton series, don’t…. don’t bother with the mediums. Just get the water mixable thinner. The fast drying medium has bad flow and the linseed oil and other medium do the same thing as the thinner except dries twice as long. Don’t waste money on the mediums, just use the WMO thinner. That;s what ive learned today.
If you are a digital artist who, for some reason, wanna get into oil painting, my biggest cost-saving advice is to start with the following paints:
- primary Cyan (i use cerulean blue)
- magenta
- primary yellow (i use lemon yellow)
- ivory black
- titanium white (get a big tube)
Basically its the CMYK palette + white.
My main argument here is that cmyk are the colors most digital artists have to get familiar with (wether we like it or not), due to its use for prints. It is the palette that transfer digital mediums on to physical materials. So it would be a good starting point before you splurge on more colors that you might not need.
When you prepare colors for a painting, you mix colors with each other to create more shades. But any color you create by mixing will always have less saturation than its parent colors. So if you want to have a big range of colorful shades to work with, while also not wanna spend too much money, then using a cmyk palette is ime the best choice.
And also if you are unsure which colors to mix and dont wanna waste paint on colors you end up not even using, you can do a mockup palette digitally by using CMYK and see what colors to make and which ones will look like ass. This have helped me a lot so far, because cmyk are very standardized colors on all digital programs.
I thiink the one additional paint you should also get is ultramarine blue - mainly because its super high in chroma and is used in a lot of art tutorials.
I dont like it personally, but it’s in every set of paints for a good reason. Its the color ppl use to darken other colors instead of using black (i mix with black for my paintings because im not a coward)
In many other instances, being able to finish an artwork quickly and move on to the next one is a benefit. But with oil paint?? I cant churn out 10 paintings in a week because shit has to dry and i have to store them somewhere!!
I tend to make more art during spring and i have so many ideas but wow i picked the one medium that forces me to slow down.
Its like walking a dog that wants to stop and sniff everything but you wanna get some exercise going.
i think the best thing i’ve discovered with oil painting is that all of the coloring advice you are told as a digital artist applies… but also some of it kinda goes the opposite direction?
know the whole “warm light cool shadows” rule? Fuck that shit - oil painters use brown and other warm shades for shadows. And then they mix in some blue to neutralize it. Especially for human portraits. Warm shadows with cool lights are often used for painting overcast light settings.
“Dont shade with black or white” - ever heard of the zorn palette? It’s rly popular among portrait oil painters and you can only work with yellow, red, black and white. You HAVE to mix in black and white in order to darken or lighten a color with that palette! And people love using those colors! No blue or green needed!! You just gotta use color relativity to create the impression of blues and greens among all the reds and yellows!! Thats how you use color theory baby!!!!
