This story is for @malakia215​ who pointed out that Izuna and Obito have the same birthday, and someone else (uncredited by choice) who said that they thought that Obito might actually be Izuna. It is also for the awesome @kurakura0-0​ without whom this story would never have made it past the first chapter.

Warnings:

The canonical character death tag is for Madara.

Obito watches this old man who claims to be Madara - the Uchiha who took the Shodaime's hand, the Uchiha who tried to destroy the village - and feels something in him rebel.

He's old, possibly the oldest person that Obito has ever seen, gone wrinkled and grey even as he's tied to the tree that gives him life, and somehow Obito knows that this is very wrong.

His hair should be black, his eyes fiery. He should be angry, furious, a titan of battle. Not this patient spider in a web of lies.

The only thing that still feels natural is the way Madara looks at the figure of the Shodaime who grows out of the tree, hands eternally reaching. When Obito sees Madara trace that unseeing face, hold those unmoving hands, he can't help but grieve… though for whom he doesn't know.

For Madara? For the Shodaime? For himself?

He ignores the small voice that whispers, for he's already gotten used to the silent voices during the short time that he's spent in this cave of death and despair.

The voice makes no sense anyway.

But every time he looks at Madara, he has to quell the words that rise to his lips.

Nii-san, what happened to you?
