Probably the best piece I did throughout all of my classes -- my redesign of Princess Allura from Voltron: Legendary Defender for my CGMA Character Design class with David DePasquale. I adore her more every time I draw her.

This design is very personal to me. It’s inspired heavily by afrofuturism, which I am fascinated by, and very specifically by Eritrean culture. My very first friend growing up was Eritrean. Eritrea’s parent country, Ethiopia, was the only country in Africa to evade Western colonization hundreds of years ago. Also, they make the strangest, most delicious flatbread.

And for my final act tonight, by far the most elaborate piece I did for any of my classes. This was another one that I bounced between my CGMA Color and Light and Composition classes, and for good reason -- the file has upwards of 50 layers. Strictly speaking, it probably didn’t need that many, but I've screwed up the Procreate ColorDrop function enough times to be cautious. 

This is a piece that I’ve wanted to make for a while, and these classes gave me the skills to finally do it. it's inspired somewhat by @speakswords fic, All The Way Down, and somewhat by my own nostalgic (and more recent) experiences of going to amusement parks. Most of my best and most cherished memories happened at an amusement park.

Oh, and special thanks to Wayne Tsay (@/waynetsaywhat on instagram) and to  my Color and Light teacher, Chris Brock, for introducing me to his work. I did a study of one of his paintings and used the techniques I learned from it to paint the city below, because I never have any idea what to put in backgrounds.

I am once again frankensteining imagery from @speakswords’ fics into my own Voltron rewrite... Um. Imitation is the highest form of flattery?

The catastrophic cosmic event pictured here is the collapse of two binary stars into each other from speaks’ fic, Cores of Diamond. I read it for the first time years ago, but the visuals have always stuck with me because of speaks’ incredible prose. Tênnero reminded me a lot of what happened to Taujeer, but I find those little Taujeerians really creepy, so I rewrote it as Olkarion...

The Olkari have known for generations that their planet would eventually be destroyed by the collapse of the binary stars they orbit. They thought they had a few years left, but Haggar used her powers to disrupt the gravitational pull between the two stars, sending Olkarion to an early demise. Allura thought she could save them. Ryner soothes her with the knowledge that everything must eventually return to the same cosmic dust.

Had an assignment this week to draw myself as a fantasy character so I drew myself as Allura’s girlfriend 💖
