Horror Movie Review! The Void (2016/17)

Mostly spoiler-free, a bit of a ramble

It's a great cosmic horror! I think effective cosmic horror leaves you a bit confused about who and what exactly happened by the end. The practical effects were amazing. They were gooey and gory and now one of my friends thinks I have a weird obsession with meat (not saying he's right, but maybe I'll review the game Scorn sometime too) The creature designs were great, and again the practical effects with them were just disgusting. I loved it.

If you've seen it, definitely go watch the behind the scenes featurette on yt called "Nightmare Logic"! I love movies made with more love and passion than budget, and this is a perfect example of that - though it didn't seem very low budget at all. They mention Silent Hill as an inspiration, and I definitely picked up on that while watching. I think this movie could easily translate into a really good videogame, especially in that grainy, low poly, retro style. Criticisms:

A lot of flashing/strobing lights. If you have any sensitivity for flashing lights, be careful.

A personal opinion, I think pregnancy-centered body horror is one of the lowest hanging fruits in the body horror genre, because pregnancy is already is pretty horrifying on its own. It can be done well, but the ratio of men vs women and instances of pregnancy body horror felt off in this one.

The Void is a cosmic horror that matches the spirit of Lovecraft's stories without having any obvious connections to his works. The monsters, body horror and practical effects are delightfully disgusting. I think it might be in my top 5 favorite horror movies💜

Ahh, I'm really glad! I wanted to say I felt like Fingers sort of like a representation of what Zero would've become if he'd stayed with the group, but wasn't sure if it'd be too far off the mark. Thanks for doing what you do and writing in general!

Continuing because when I say i enjoyed How to Break a Man, I mean I really, really enjoyed it: the original characters in the fic where so good too! I'm particularly curious about Fingers' past, and about what happened to Fingers and Jet after the events of the fic. I have questions about The Boss too, but all of this is only if you're not too busy to elaborate...?

Oh, sure, Fingers I did have more thoughts on.

Fingers is meant to be paralleled with Zero. Jet is the next victim in this toxic cycle--and Fingers was the one who came before. (His time in that occupation came to an end because, as they say, he was missing a nose and an ear and he was no longer cute. As to how he lost those bits--punishment for being caught in petty crimes.) That’s why Fingers is the one who nominally protests when they’re like “hey let’s pimp out the kid”, and why he feels some degree of connection to Zero that leads him to be something of a personal mentor to him.

None of this is strictly necessary to enjoy the fic, but it’s my headcanon www.

Sadly I don’t really have many thoughts about The Boss in general, and I didn’t think much about what happens to individual gang members after the events of the story, although the Zero/Harold supports sort of hint at the future of his gang.

I really like the quote in How to Break a Man where you say, "He was already filled with holes where he'd lost parts of himself that he would never get back." But I was wondering, do you think he has any other major (like actual chunks missing) lasting disfigurements from his time in the slums? I really love this fic, by the way! It reads very believably in realizing the implications of Zero's past mentioned in his supports. I like that its more earnest account than excessive attempt at angst.

I guess if you wanted to go Full French Poverty Drama you could make an argument for teeth, but I’m not personally inclined to go Full French Poverty Drama. So as far as actual chunks of flesh missing goes, I don’t personally have any headcanons to that effect (other than a couple of nasty scars) but mostly because I haven’t really dedicated a whole lot of thought to “what other body parts could Zero be missing??”

Actually I wrote How to Break a Man at a stage well before I felt ready to write a completely solid backstory fic for anyone in FE14, mostly because I wanted to wallow in Zero’s tragic backstory, so honestly my thoughts on him don’t go as deep as I’d like. ;;
