Dr. Mason's Email

At certain points during your adventure, Dr. Mason will send the player an email. The message usually contains hints on game play and what decks are used by the Club Masters and Grand Masters. He'll also attach a booster pack or two. The emails can be accessed through the PC in each Club lounge and can be reread from that point onward. In Here Comes Team GR!, Mail is accessed through the Start Menu instead.

Below are transcripts of all 15 emails:

"[Name], it's me, Doctor Mason. Are you getting the hang of the Pokémon Trading Card Game? I have some information for you about booster packs. If you want to collect the same cards, duel the same person many times to get a particular booster pack! By doing so, you will be able to collect the same cards, making it easier for you to build your deck. Another method for collecting cards is to use Card Pop! When you and a friend use Card Pop! you will each receive a new card! Once you Pop! with a certain friend, you won't be able to Pop! with that friend again, so find many friends who own the Pokémon Trading Card Game for Game Boy and Card Pop! with them to get new cards! Oh, here's something for you… [Colosseum] I'll be sending you useful information by e-mail. I'll also attach a booster pack for you, so check your mail often. Mason Laboratory Doctor Mason ;)"

"[Name], it's me, Doctor Mason. It looks like you've won quite a few medals. Want to try building your own deck? Start by changing some of the cards in your present deck. If you have 3 of a Basic Pokémon card, you'll want 2 of its Stage 1 and 1 of its Stage 2 Pokémon. If you follow this rule, your deck will be well balanced. You should have about 14 Basic Pokémon and anywhere between 20 and 26 Energy cards in your deck. The type of Energy cards will depend on the type of Pokémon you have in your deck. He uses Selfdestruct for maximum damage! Watch the number of Energy cards on his Pokémon and look out for Selfdestruct. I would suggest using Fighting Pokémon such as Cubone and Rhyhorn to counter Isaac's Deck. The Cubone & Marowak Deck from the Rock Medal Deck Machine is probably your best bet. Card Combo: Foreclosure (Rocket’s Sneak Attack + Lass + The Rocket’s Trap)

Hand destruction helps reduce the amount of options your opponent has to try and stop you. These three cards work well together, but have to be played rather specifically for maximum effectiveness.

Sneak Attack is used early-game to get rid of your opponent’s single Oak or Computer Search. If you see multiple Trainers in your opponent’s hand, you’ll have to play another Sneak Attack or Lass. Lass is especially useful if you have the advantage in terms of Pokémon, preventing your opponent from gaining the upper hand with their Trainers (just be aware it removes your Trainers as well). 

Trap is the finisher to bring your opponent’s hand down to zero. If successful, it’ll get rid of other cards like Energy, reducing the possibility of cards like Item Finder. However, don’t use Trap early-game, against a deck that has a lot less cards than yours, or if your opponent’s hand has five or more cards, since using Trap will just give them an advantage.

This combo can be further enhanced with Psyduck lv. 15′s Headache or Dark Vileplume’s Hay Fever, preventing your opponent from using Trainers in the first place so they have lots of potential targets just sitting in their hand.

Card Combo: Hyperallergic (Dark Vileplume + Haunter lv. 26)

Dark Vileplume’s Hay Fever is a powerful Pokémon Power, preventing the usage of all Trainer Cards. It’s similar to Psyduck lv. 15′s Headache attack, but doesn’t need to be used every turn to continue its effect.

We haven’t gotten to this Haunter card yet, but its first attack is Poltergeist, which lets you look at your opponent’s hand and does 10 damage for each Trainer Card there. So, the essence of this combo is to have your opponent build up a surplus of Trainer Cards in their hand (since they can’t play them if Dark Vileplume is in play), then use Poltergeist to hit their Active Pokémon for a lot of damage.

You’ll have to keep Dark Vileplume alive to pull this off, though it is made easier since it can’t be Gusted into a bad position. Just be careful of Bench-targeting attacks and you should be okay.

Game Center

Much like Celadon and Goldenrod Cities in the main series, Here Comes Team GR! features a casino-like area where the player can play games to earn coins and exchange them for prizes.

When visiting the Game Center for the first time, the player receives a Bill’s PC card from Ronald and 10 coins from the receptionist.

Coins earned or received in the Game Center cannot be taken out of the building; any coins held by the player are deposited to the receptionist and can be retrieved when the player returns. If the player completely runs out of coins, the receptionist will give them 10 more.

By talking to the attendant at the right desk, coins can be exchanged for the following prizes:

200 coins - One random booster pack

500 coins - Three random booster packs

500 coins - Jigglypuff Coin

1000 coins - Bill’s PC

2000 coins - Venusaur lv. 64

2000 coins - Mew lv. 15

The Game Center also features slot machines. However, the reels on these machines cannot be stopped manually by the player. White machines cost one coin to play while gold machines cost three.

For one coin, a girl in the Game Center offers a game that challenges the player to flip a coin and get as many heads in a row as possible. Landing three heads will earn more coins, while landing 10 heads will earn the player a Mew lv. 8. Landing tails is an automatic loss.

The Game Center also houses two special machines. One machine has the player deposit five cards in exchange for a new card. The second machine, in exchange for 20 coins and a Bill’s PC card, allows players to obtain one of five Stage 2 Pokémon: Omastar lv. 36, Machamp lv. 54, Golem lv. 37, Gengar lv. 40, and Alakazam lv. 45.

Card Combo: Jelly Sponge (Mr. Mime + Alakazam + Tentacool)

Despite having only 40 HP, Mr. Mime’s Invisible Wall is fantastic for holding off your opponent’s big attackers. Due to this, it can only take 20 damage at a time. But with some help, you can easily heal off that damage.

Use Alakazam’s Damage Swap to move damage off of Mr. Mime and onto Tentacool. Then use Tentacool’s Cowardice to return Tentacool to your hand, erasing all damage from it in the process. Then put Tentacool back into play, as Cowardice cannot be used on the same turn that Tentacool was played. 

Be aware that certain cards like Nidoking and Muk shut down this combo: the former has Toxic and the latter negates all other Pokémon Powers. In Here Comes Team GR!, look out for Goop Gas Attack, as well.

Card Combo: Eye of the Storm (Pidgeot lv. 38 + Hitmonlee)

Nothing complicated about this one: use Pidgeot’s Slicing Wind to deal 30 damage to a random opposing Pokémon, and if your foe has a Benched Pokémon that was heavily damaged by this attack, finish it off with Hitmonlee’s Stretch Kick.

This combination can be strengthened with Gust of Wind, forcing a Pokémon with a high Retreat Cost into the Active position so your opponent will have a tough time changing the match-up. Using Dodrio’s Retreat Aid is a good idea, as it will allow you to switch between Pidgeot and Hitmonlee without having to discard any Energy.
