Trinity Laban Review - Grace Walsh
On Thursday 14th November we watched two separate performances from some students who were currently studying at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. The students that had performed we currently in their third year on their BA Honours degreee and we was told that both pieces had been created by the students and visiting choreographers.
The first performance that we watched was called 'Something From Nothing/Nothing From Something' and the piece had been choreographed by Marina Collard. We learnt that the piece was created by each of the students having their own solo and then bringing them together to make duo's or trio's. I was slightly confused about the whole piece but also found it very interesting to watch. I didn't think that their was much of a performance which found it quite tedious at times but still made me concentrate more on the actual choreography and the strength of the moves. The music didn't really seem to pick up and their wasn't much sound throughout which I found more of a skill as they had to be able to all connect with each other in a way and didn't even have counts on which to move on which most dancers are quite used to. Some of the dancers caught my eye and really stood out to me such as the dancer up downstage left who really had lots of focus throughout. At one point she used all the strength in her legs to bed down really slowly to the floor and she used all her balanced to be able to stay on top of her body without giving in. It was very simple also very effective and this really made me watch her for most of the performance. At times I did get distracted from the people on stage as some of the people at the sides of stage as they wasn't very focus and this really did catch my eye considering there wasn't a lot going on on stage.
The second piece was called 'All That Remains' and was choreographed by Rosemary Butcher. The piece was based on the students having to find a picture of a place that felt special to them and a place where they would feel safe. They explained that they took the picture and they had to divide it up into different sections and take half of the picture away and create something with what they were left with. I found with this piece it became slightly repetative and seemed to drag on slightly throughout. I was always waiting for something bigger to happen each time especially when they kept swapping groups but it happened to be the same choreography over and over again. In this piece I did like the use of falling and releasing and really liked the use of the floor throughout. I do think that one girl really caught my eye by the way she was taking a risk and standing on one leg but then catching herself on the floor and this really showed a lot of strength. I do feel that this piece could have been a lot more interesting and there could have been more of a build but was nice to see dancers really going for the piece even then the moves were so simple but it really looked effective.
Throughout both pieces I found that there wasn't much of a performance and this wasn't very interesting to watch. I found for myself that many of the dancers stood out for the wrong reasons at times such as being distracted on stage or being distracted by the audience which didn't come across very professional. This became more clear to me when they had Q & A afterwards and that they explained that the aim was they had to find when a certain level in their performance where they had to perform but had to perform within theirselves and they had to realise when they were over performing which became much easier to understand. I found the Q & A afterwards very good and beneficial and allowed us to find out a lot more about the course and what the course consists of but also have the dancers a chance to explain what each piece was about which I found very interesting as I wasn't too sure what each piece was about. I did feel that many of the dancers had a great strength and that even the simplest moves looked really effective on stage. I am quite pleased that I got the chance to see some work from Laban and has really made me think about the decisions that I will make. I think this allowed me to open my mind and really think about the decisions I am going to make for this year. I do feel though that I don't really enjoy this style of dance very much and that this wouldn't be the best place for me to study, but I did enjoy each performance and really am pleased that we got to see some great work from somewhere different. I would watch a piece like this again and open my mind to other styles of dance to be more versatile.
