[[ Norman and Miss Watson had a much longer, more intimate relationship than any rumors suggest to. Even the police and Norma don't know the full extent, just that Norman was attached to her, and that the night of the school dance she drove him to her house and they engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse.

The full truth is that Norman and Blaire Watson had been in an unspoken-yet-passionate affair for at least a month beforehand--- although it never went beyond letters and hushed, private conversations they snuck in after school or in storage closets between the switch of classes. It started out with Miss Watson giving Norman personal assignments to build his own creative writing; copy down a favourite poem and write something about how it made him feel. But it quickly became a much more amicable exchange, where Miss Watson and Norman would write eachother excerpts of pieces of literature they admired, including why it was a favourite and their own opinions about each segment.

Under the thin-but-true guise of a caring tutor, their exchanges slowly began to solely consist of sending and reading sensual, passionate poetry to eachother-- yet Miss Watson took extra care to make sure all 'intimate' remarks were in quotations for their letters, and that they ~technically~ kept on the subject of literature every time they were alone... even the times she dragged him into a storage closet between classes to recite excerpts in hushed tones to one another.

Norman has been attached to Miss Watson from the get-go (for a mixture of her attractiveness, her kindness, her attention to Norman, her aesthetic, etc), so he tries his best to be 'the best student he can be' when she puts her focus on him. Unable to deny how attractive she is, he chalks up any 'warning signs' to him being paranoid, and her being really involved with his scholarly success.

While acknowledging that very good people can make terrible mistakes in certain situations, Norman still, to this day, refuses to accept that Blaire Watson had anything but pure intentions towards him.

Most all of White Pine Bay who actually know that Miss Watson and Norman were together on the night of her death decide to chalk it up to Miss Watson being of 'loose morals', or as Norma put it, 'it doesn't mean anything except she was seducing young boys.'

...Yet Norman still has every letter he's ever received from Miss Blaire Watson in a locked puzzlebox of his own make under a loose floorboard in his bedroom. He swears the letters will vindicate his poor teacher once he dies and the words are finally discovered. ]]
