Billy bit his lip, trying to ignore her stubborn nature. He already could tell from the beginning that she was this way. In a way, he was too, but he had enough experiences dealing with these personalities to where he knows his way around it.
Part of him was scared, deep down. He knew how illnesses spread, more common than most would think. he had firsthand experience with a deadly illness, his mom having tuberculosis, and he wouldn’t wish it on his worst enemy.
“Sure, yeah, I would say my healthiest days consisted of a runny nose and a sore throat. Never felt better than those moments,” he chuckled. This was more of a way to deal with the anxious feeling in his stomach and chest. Then he became serious, no smile on his face this time. “Come on Kay, you can hardly stand, you need rest.”
He hoped it was only that, a cold or not being able to deal with the weather conditions, but his mind couldn’t stop thinking about deadly illnesses many people had. Smallpox, tuberculosis, yellow fever, cholera, typhus, and probably more.
“I don’t mind carryin’ ya’ if I need to. Just know that.”

It had been peaceful having a few days to himself building up his own shelter in Sanctuary Hill with is downtime. Construction had never been his forte, small temporary shelters sure but he had rarely had to build a more permanent form of housing. While Kay had left to take care of her own business he made good progress on his fortifications, getting a standard shack built in one of the backyards of a pre-war house and moving a few pieces of furniture in. The necessary mattress followed by a couch and a handful of decorations to spruce up his living quarters, a crate to place any gear he didn’t need at the time and of course a makeshift weapon crafting bench in order to make repairs.
His mind found itself in a strange state, oddly calm and relaxed for once. Roadkill had begun to drink less heavily in the past handful of days, only taking a bottle to relax at the end of the day once work had been finished. He had been hammering some nails into the shack’s wooden walls when he heard other settlers speak of Kay’s return. Wandering out investigating the rumor there was a sight that raised the hairs on his arms. Trickles of blood leading towards the bathroom. Nothing good could come from this.
Following the trail he found the door cracked slightly, clearly there was a body inside. Creaking the door back he stared at the sight of an injured Kay assessing the gash in her arm. Roadkill’s instinct was to shake his head, almost disappointed in her foolishness despite his knowledge that injury happens.

kay had been working so hard , to no avail . such a thought caused a slight frown upon the boy’s face . he wish he could help her , someway . . . somehow . . . maybe , maybe he can be what she needs right now .

“Why bother bein’ a saint?”
Roadkill was no stranger to the cruelty of the wastes. From Nevada to Boston he’s seen it all. The fate of America has left devastation across the country, something Roadkill has never quite cared for. It’s the only world he’s known, the pain and suffering of the people’s day to day lives was normal to him. Which in his mind justifies the violence and malicious intent in his nature. Shame was an unfamiliar figure, a concept Roadkill had long since blocked from consciousness.
“God’s gone silent, bein’ a sinner ain’t a problem no more.”
The pre-war woman was a source of fascination to Roadkill. How she could continue being righteous after witness the state of a world she once knew baffled him. Perhaps it was never to understood.
Taking a sip from the canteen he carried filled with lukewarm tequila, his eyes watched the fire before him. To him it was far too early to rest, he had become accustomed to long nights of being awake, creating an eventual insomnia for himself. Most likely he would stand watch as his traveling companion slept later. But for now the two sat across from each other as a flank of radstag roasted on the fire separating them.
