Charles and the Missile Toads
this was a meme in the save dbd discord server (which you should join) and it developed some lore along the way. so, please come with me as we explore the story of Charles and the Missile Toads.
Charles' house was never decked out for the holidays. If anything happened for the holidays, it was because his mom snuck it around his father. As such, he didn't know much about any kind of decorations. Now, part of that is as a kid, he misheard "mistletoe" as "missile toad" and since they sound close enough alike, no one could correct him. He was always sad that the places he went in public never had missile toads, but he'd figured it was just something people did in their homes.
After he died, the first holidays came around in the agency. It was the first place, and person, he considered to be home. So, he wanted to show it with a missile toad. He was frustrated that none of the shops around had any missile toads, so he decided to make one himself. He found a toy frog and a toy missile, wrapped them together with ribbon and hung it in the office.
Edwin was incredibly confused when he saw it for the first time and asked what it was. Charles reply was, "It's a missile toad! Ya know, it's what people put up in their homes during the holidays. Figured it belonged here!" It took a moment but Edwin figured out the mishap but he didn't tell Charles. The younger ghost was so excited about it, and he hadn't missed that he'd called their office a home. So, he nodded along and said it must've been something he'd missed over the past decades. The missile toad stayed, and was safely tucked away when the holidays finished. And every year after, the missile toad was brought back out. A few more were even made over the years.
Then came the first holidays with the girls. Charles was really excited and hung all his missile toads. Crystal came in first and immediately asked what the decorations were. He excitedly said, "It's missile toads! Ya know, the holiday tradition. Could never find any out in the shops but it's what you put around any home!" She just stared at him before saying, "What? Charles, mistletoe is like a plant that you hang up. People kiss under it. It's not missile toads."
Never has a face dropped so quickly. He sniffled as he pulled down his missile toads, embarrassed as hell. He was incredibly quiet for the next few days and Edwin was not happy. Crystal had rarely felt so guilty. So, she went out and made more missile toads. She sat the Rude Boy down and gave them to him. She said that she didn't want to make him feel bad. That if he wanted to hang up missile toads, he should.
Edwin chimed in, saying that they'd been putting up missile toads as a decoration for their home for thirty years. Surely, that must make it a tradition. Charles smiled, asking if he meant it. When he got confirmation, he raced around the office and hung up all of the missile toads, old and new. Once he'd finished, he spun both of them around in massive hugs. "Better than some dusty old plant, eh?" They can't help but agree.
(Niko comes in a few days later, sees the missile toads and continues her day with a smile. She figures out the whole thing pretty quick and never asks about it.)
