@ youngmasterwisdomperson Based on our discussion from earlier. I really wanted to draw mistlight!Syl and Windrunner/Mistborn Vin.
Okay, non-Cosmere fans among my followers, this post is not for you. The rest of you, feel free to read more. I’m going to be rambling about the Mistlight au @cosmermaid and I were discussing the other day, so it’s going to get lengthy.
Guess who figured out how to use Read More links. It’s me. Say goodbye to repetitive scrolling across increasingly long threads of dense rambling.
I need desperately to scratch my itch to determine the plot of this AU in greater detail based on application of cause and effect. I imagine @cosmermaid has probably already written her own take and is just waiting to post it on her new ao3 account, but regardless I wanna at the very least write out my own take on a plot summary.
For starters, Kelsier isn’t there to guide Vin or the crew in this AU, and without him Vin would not have turned out the way she did in all likelihood. That said, in order for this AU to function, someone has to show up and stop Caiman or however his name is spelled (I consumed the Cosmere via audiobooks), Vin’s old abusive crew leader, from killing her for trying to run away. That said, in the book, Kelsier and the crew intentionally delayed the inquisitor and stopped the scout from finding the place, so theoretically, the inquisitor could probably arrive much more quickly in this au because Kelsier isn’t there as a distraction. So instead of Kelsier pushing Caiman away, it’s a rusting steel inquisitor, who takes the bloodied and battered Vin to Kredik Shaw alive, so they can use her for the experiment with Syl. They want to see how Allomancy could interact with foreign magic, and for that they need a skaa misting or mistborn to play with. They were already on Vin’s trail by this point anyway, having tortured and killed Reen in vain to get info on her.
We get the same scene as near the end of Final Empire where the inquisitors use Vin as proof to the Lord Ruler that Obligators are incompetent, so the Inquisitors take charge of the Steel Ministry really early on. The main difference being that Vin is completely untrained and unarmed and hasn’t had a character arc by this point. That, and this is where the Inquisitors ask if they have permission to use Vin as a test subject for the “special” project. The Lord Ruler grants permission, and Vin is carried off to her cell.
Or at least...eventually she ends up in her cell. First, they take her to a room where she’s shackled to a table, and a huge spike made of a metal she doesn’t recognized is unwrapped from a wad of a silvery metal foil. Obviously, Vin is terrified, and suffers much pain as this spike is hammered directly into her chest. Vin blacks out, and to her surprise, wakes up shackled to a cell wall, the spike still in her chest, her clothing stained red around where it had entered, but to her surprise, mostly healed. Make no mistake, the wound still hurts like a motherfucker, throbbing horribly as she tries desperately to find a more comfortable position. Left alone in the dark, all she can really do is sit and reflect on recent events. How could she have been so stupid to reveal that she was leaving? How quickly she’d been betrayed. Anyone will betray you, Reen’s voice says in her mind. “That’s not true!” Says a tiny voice, youthful and feminine, heard as if it were right next to her, and yet all around her. Vin jumps at this, looking frantically around but seeing nothing. “Good people wouldn’t do that!” The voice says. Vin is certain she must be going mad.
In a few controlled experiments, the inquisitors test Vin’s Allomancy and give her some pewter to heal up a little - again, in a very controlled environment. Vin uses this, plus the fact that the inquisitors called her Mistborn in front of the Lord Ruler, to figure out that something about her Luck must come from whatever the residue is in the vials they’ve been feeding her, which she eventually figures out is metal flakes due to bits and pieces the Inquisitors give her in instructing her to perform certain Allomantic actions. And of course, she concludes, she must be an Allomancer, a Mistborn like the ones she’d heard so many stories about. But what about this spike that hasn’t killed her? Is she like one of those inquisitors somehow? Could they be trying to turn her into one of them? She shudders at the thought. “I don’t think you’re one of them,” the voice says, making her jump again as she hears it alone in the dark. “They’ve got waaaay more spikes than you.”
To be continued maybe.
