Headcanons about Pokemon with telepathy: -Telepathy is for sending and receiving meaning, feelings, and intentions directly to and from the brain. So: -Telepathy can bypass language barriers if a Pokemon is talking to somebody face-to-face. A telepathic message might be interpreted slightly differently if two people hear it but they speak different languages. -Telepathy is a mild form of mind-reading. Somebody speaking to a telepathic Pokemon would be intentionally trying to get their ideas across, so the spoken thoughts are freely accessible. Deeper mind reading takes more concentrated effort and mileage will vary depending on the strength of the Pokemon. -A telepathic Pokemon needs to learn a language in order to read it. -A telepathic Pokemon needs to learn a language to understand recorded speech, such as a song on a radio or show on the television. -Their telepathic voices cannot be recorded with audio equipment. Cameras cannot record their speech and they cannot use telepathy to speak on a phone call. -Stronger psychics like Mewtwo can bypass language barriers on a screen or speaker if the recording is happening in real time and they know the location of the camera or microphone. -Being able to physically speak a language is not the same skill as knowing the language. A telepathic Pokemon might be able to understand a language without using their telepathy but they still have to train themselves if they want to physically speak it. -Pokemon can still have regional dialects or accents with their telepathy. If they're speaking to a human that does not speak the language the dialect comes from, the human will perceive it in their own language with a foreign accent. -Telepathic voices can sound gendered but might not always. It will match the Pokemon's self-perception.

Muggles from the Gammage Cup is such a good character. She’s treated like she’s stupid by the rest of her village, but when she’s cast out with the other “weirdos” it turns out she has the best organizational skills out of all of them and can figure out the logistics of building a homestead.

Then when offered a chance to come back but still being treated like an “other” she tells off the mayor. You go Muggles, you and your bejeweled orange cloak.

I have lived in a city. I live rurally. I love both. I hate suburbia and that in between place where people think they live rurally but they just live outside of public transit range. Still overcrowded but no way to get anywhere without getting in a car and being stuck in traffic.

Pet peeve:

Linguists who claim that no words are truly "untranslatable", then launches into a 5000 word explanation of a concept that doesn't exist in the target language.

Look, I get that sometimes you need to modify existing concepts with an adjective/adverb or preposition, so I'll give you a few words. But it you need more than five words to "translate" a foreign one, you haven't translated it, you have explained or defined it, and the word is untranslatable.

For example, using some of the most common language examples from Swedish to English: the swedish word "mångata" is easily translated as "moonlight shining on still-ish water". "Fika", on the other and, could just be translated as "coffee break", but then you'd lose 98% of the context: it doesn't have to have coffee, it could be a lighter meal, like a snack, it doesn't have to be a break, it can happen at home, it's usually a very communal activity, but it doesn't have to be, but it if it is, it kind of requires you to sit down together, however briefly. The archetype has baked goods, like pastries or open face sandwiches, but I have friends who refer to their mid-morning rice cakes as fika because she can't have gluten. You see the issue. That wasn't a translation.

I notice this a lot when it comes to anime translations. A common insult used in anime is 貴様 (kisama), which is honestly just a derogatory form of "you". It's got a history to it, it's an archaic formal version of "you" that became an insult over time. (Also from what I can tell it's really only used in anime? Apparently saying it IRL is considered cringe.) It also doesn't even stand out because using ANY form of "you" in Japanese can be excessively intimate or confrontational and is best avoided in casual conversation.

We USED to have a similar insult in English. It was insulting to call a single person "you" opposed to "thou" back when we still used thou. It was dismissive of their individual personhood, you was meant to address a group rather than a single individual.

Since "you" became standard to English, we don't have a direct translation for 貴様 anymore. So a lot of anime translations will default to "you bastard" instead. A lot of translation machines (like Google translate) will also say this is the translation.

Except... bastard has a specific meaning in English, and is also not an existing insult in the Japanese language. You can't really translate 貴様 to English or "you bastard" into Japanese.

It's just something I noticed. "You bastard!" is used a lot more in anime dubs than it is by actual English speakers, so maybe it IS similar to 貴様 in that regard.
