Misty: Moonchild and Four Faces of Eve
Trina Robbins (1938-2024), ''Trina's Women'', 1976 Robbins was one of the earliest participants in the underground comix movement. Her Marvel comic, 'Misty' was published under Star Comics, an imprint of Marvel aimed at younger kids (which usually involved adapting toys and animated shows into comics amounting, essentially, to another avenue of advertising). While 'Misty' quickly developed an enthusiastic fan base and the comic received a ton of mail, many comic shops basically refused to carry "female-oriented" material which resulted in the comic being hard to find and, eventually, the series was cancelled as a commercial failure. The images below were taken from issues #1-6 of 'Misty' which was published between 1985 & 1986. I think I have a thing for Spike. Robbins also wrote some non-fiction books worth checking out, to name a few: "Nell Brinkley and the new woman in the early 20th century", "From Girls to Grrrlz : A History of [female] Comics from Teens to Zines", and "A Century of Women Cartoonists"
Later this year, the British Library is running an exhibition on British comics. It's looking to be quite extensive, according to the Guardian's write-up.
The exhibition will be running from 2 May - 19 August 2014 in PACCAR Gallery and is called Comics Unmasked. It'll be looking at everything from Misty to 2000 AD and everything in-between.
