that night, you’re sitting on a soft blanket you brought to the open field, chigiris scent enveloping you. it’s a mix of vanilla and something woody, and is welcoming to your senses.

he notices the brace. the same brace you’ve worn every day since the day he met you.

“why do you have a knee brace?” he asks without thinking.

your eyes widen, your face slightly hollowing and losing color at his question. “um, well.. i had a bad injury.” you say quietly, then pull your phone out and pull up a picture. it’s of you in your schools track uniform, breaking through the finish lines tape, a victorious smile on your face.

“i used to run track. i even beat a couple records, and currently hold one for girls high school track and field. but…” you pull up a video that was dated to just this past fall—only a few months ago.

the gun pops, and you take off. it doesn’t even look like you’re running, more so gliding through the air. as you’re nearing the finish line, the person on your tail kicks your foot out, causing you to fall on your knee, your leg twisting in a way it shouldn’t.

your cry of pain breaks through the cheers of the crowd as you fall to the ground, clutching your knee. that’s where the video ends.

when chigiri looks back up at you, tears are welling up in your eyes, a couple falling over your waterline. “that was for the nationals qualifier. the girl behind me tripped me. i tore straight through my ACL and LCL. it dislodged my meniscus, and my patella was dislocated.” you explain, wiping tears from your face. “i had to have multiple surgeries. i can’t run anymore. my dream.. is dead.”

your voice breaks on the last word. tears are falling freely, streaming down your face as you softly cry. “i had scholarships lined up. i was gonna try and go pro.” you laughed bitterly, “like sure does have its way of fucking people over.”

chigiris heart broke at the defeated tone in your voice. at the sight of your tears. at the knowledge that he got to continue his dream despite his injury, while yours crumbled to dust.

and now everything was coming together. the knee brace. the limp. the small winces of pain that came whenever you stood or sat down. why you never tried to catch up with him if he was too far ahead.

he tilts your chin towards him, and presses his lips to yours. it surprises you, but you melt into the kiss. your lips are warm and soft, a bit wet and salty from your tears. but he doesn’t care. when he pulls away, he kisses your tears away, making you laugh a little.

“i know the timing isn’t the best, but i like you. a lot. and you sharing your pain with me.. only deepens that affection. please, let me be your boyfriend.” he says softly against your skin, and when he feels your head nodding, he wraps his arms around you in a tight hug.

in that moment, underneath the starry sky with the girl of his dreams in his arms, he vows to protect you at all times. to make you feel valued and help you achieve whatever new dreams you put yourself to.

because if he could dream again, he’d tear the world down making sure you could too.

— the favorite part about your afrocentric hair to Nagi is... bonnets. Nagi LOVES bonnets. He can't believe he'd gone his whole life without them!
