His eyes never left the female as she stopped in her tracks. She was looking in his direction upon recognizing where his voice had come from. It wasn't like he had been hiding, he was simply enjoying a smoke, away from most folks so no one would bother him, but apparently that was not going to be the case tonight anymore.
Robert had been quick enough to avoid getting hit by the kick, but not enough to avoid getting pinned, hard, against the cold floor. This lady was pretty damn fast! He didn't even register that his cig was now on the ground, a couple feet away from them, similar to his bowler hat, which was lying down just a few inches away from his head.
He could have wrestled himself free from her grip, yeah, but he was certain that doing so would have only made things worse and cause a lot more misunderstandings. Instead, he remained there, where she kept him still.
"Sorry if I startled you, Miss. I assure you that was not the intention." He apologized. No hidden meanings in his words. "I was just tryin' t' warn you of the dangers of this place." He added, unable to notice the bruises on her face due to the lack of light in the alley.
