takashi paused his game at the familiar sound of keys in the door, opening and closing with a click and the soft padding of your footsteps as you walked down the hallway. today, however, something was different. stretched out sighs fell from your lips instead of the usual soft chant of his name till he responded and you footfalls stopped further away than they usually would.
a long moment of silence passed and still nothing came from you so mitsuya placed the remote down, sliding off of the couch and heading towards the hallway before swinging round the doorway. his gaze fell on your back, shoulder pressed up against the wall and arms wiping your face. huh. weird.
you would usually skip in all jolly on a good day or come in slumped on a bad day but you would always come in, to the living room, never hover by the door. something was definitely wrong. mitsuya could tell. he had a knack for just knowing if something was going on with you and that was definitely the case for now too.
he approached cautiously, stopping a few feet away.
takashi: baby? what's up?
now that was definitely not normal.
sure you flinched sometimes, everyone did, but not because of him, not with that expression of fear on your face as you turned halfway to face him. before he could say anything though you stammered out a shaky response.
takashi, brows knit tightly together: you okay..? wait, were you cry-
y/n: no- w-well i was, but it's just period cramps...i need the toilet.
slipping right on past him before he could press further. that was fine, he wasn't the type to press anyways, he hated making you uncomfortable, but it was clear to him that something was wrong.
he scratched the back of his head slightly before his gaze landed on your phone sitting within arms reach atop the shoe rack. it lit up as if on queue and when he lifted it he found a whole list of notifications from 'boss'. one after the other with a few missed called mixed in. now this was weird. but as soon as his finger hovered over the first notification to read it he realised what he was doing. he trusted you, so there was no reason to go through your phone. he never had, you never went through his, so why would he go through yours? sure, the spam messages from your boss were strange but that wasn't an excuse. he placed the phone back and went to heat up the dinner he cooked for you.
half an hour passed and you still hadn't come down to eat so he went up to check on you, pushing the bedroom door open slightly to find you asleep. back turned, coat dumped at the foot of the bed, bag on top of it, toilet lights still open and its door still wide open. you must've been exhausted, so he decided to just let you rest in hopes that you might come clean in the morning once you had gotten a good rest. he sighed, sliding in behind you and spooning you before drifting off, an arm subconsciously draped around your waist.
the next morning, takashi was up nice and early enough to conduct his plan - presenting your bedside table with a nice warm cup of coffee accompanied by a blueberry muffin but when you finally woke up you had just said you were tired, heading to the bathroom and mitsuya could instantly tell; you were avoiding him. he wasn't the type to push or pressure, never, but if something was bothering you so much that you couldn't even tell him, that you were willing to avoid him, he just had to find out what it was.
after a while you emerged from the bathroom, flashing him a small smile and telling him you would be late for work if you sat to drink the coffee and so he should put it into a takeaway cup. again, mitsuya didn't pressure, simply observed. he watched you get ready, pulling the buttons of your blouse together with an absent gaze, forcing items into your back with little effort, abandoning items that wouldn't fit with ease before pulling your bag over your shoulder robotically, as if your body was going through the motions, but you weren't really there. takashi's eyes grazed over his car keys and he's never felt like such a genius. this was his chance.
takashi: come on baby, i'll drop you off
y/n: ..are you sure..? you don't have to-
takashi: hundred percent, love, lets go.
he flashed you a reassuring smile before offering you his arm and your now takeaway coffee and led you to the car. the drive was quiet, you sipping your coffee in the tiniest sips, staring into it as if it were the most interesting thing in the world while he drove, trying to ignore the tension lingering in the air. he was tempted to ask, to prod you in order to find out what was going on but he knew that if you were going to tell him, you would have already. you two were just like that, you never hid anything from each other so the fact that you seemed to be hiding something now just hinted to him that it was probably something you didn't want him to know, didn't want him to worry about but if whatever this was was upsetting you this much, he would just find out himself.
he parked right in front of the main entrance to your workplace, turning to smile at you before handing you your bag and leaning in for a kiss. you hesitated. yeah, something was definitely wrong.
he pecked your cheek instead watching your slightly confused expression and adorably puckered lips before you just mumbled a slight 'bye bye..' and stepped out of the car. takashi observed every detail, every movement. the way your head snapped side to side, as if looking around for someone before you finally made it through the glass doors but not without shooting a glance back at the car at least 10 times.
he had no idea how he was going to find out what was bothering you so he decided to just linger around for a while, he might end up seeing something eventually which might explain your behaviour from yesterday, your unusual behaviour. he was slightly hurt by the fact that you hadn't come to him about whatever it was that was bothering you, no matter what it was. he would've thought you had known him long enough to know that he would never judge, never jump to conclusions, never put you down but whatever this was must've buried that trust that you had for him.
he doesn't know how much time passed, but as he stared out at the looming glass building deep in thought, there was a sudden knock on his window. he turned his gaze towards the window, rolling it all the way down when he spotted a familiar girl looming with two others - he had seen her before in your department. all three of them had bright, shy smiles on their faces as they inched closer awkwardly until one of them finally had the courage to speak.
lillia: h-hey! are you waiting for someone..? i thought you were really hot and wanted to get your number...
her two friends hid their giggles behind shy expressions, shoving the girl forward slightly as if they weren't the ones who pressured her into coming forward in the first place. mitsuya decided to entertain them, since they would probably prove useful and it was probably one of the best decisions he had made his whole life.
takashi, flashing a charming smile: why hello ladies, my number did you say..? hmmm...sure, i'll give it to you, but i'd like some information in exchange, you alright with that?
lillia: sure thing! ask away~
takashi, glancing towards the glass skyscraper before turning back to them: i heard a...uhh..y/n..l/n, works here, is that true?
he noticed it instantly. the girls attempted to conceal their sour expressions behind mocking smiles and he didn't miss the way their eyes darted towards each other before they returned to him with their shy acts.
takashi, smirking: oh, is she as weird as i've heard she was?
at that moment the girl mitsuya had initially recognised as your co-worker stepped forward with a sneer, as if she had been waiting for an opportunity like this one, an opportunity to slander you.
rose: oh please, she's such a bitch. can you believe what she did yesterday? the cleaner said she saw her get on her knees and try to unzip the boss. can you believe how nasty she is? and the worser part? it was all for a fucking promotion! can you believe that she was trying to jump the ladder by spreading her disgusting fucking legs for-
the girl was instantly silenced by her friend's pinch. her face paled as if she had seen a ghost and to be fair, she would have been lucky if it were a ghost. mitsuya's gaze was sharp enough to cut glass, laser focused on the girls face with deathly calm before he finally looked back at lillia.
mitsuya: thank you very much for the information, as for my number, i have a girlfriend.
and with that he rolled his window up, driving off. what they had said made no sense. it was obviously just rumours, it had to be. but something was gnawing away at him - if it was just a rumour, if it really wasn't true, why didn't you just tell him?
he lost track after a while.
flying through the streets, everything became a blur. it was almost peaceful for a moment until he finally reached the end of his road. he finally tore his gaze away from the road and glanced around at his surroundings. he was totally lost, had no idea where he was so for the rest of the 3 hours until he would have to pick you up from work he navigated his way back.
you emerged from the same glass doors he had dropped you at at 6pm sharp, as if you had run to be out of the building. mitsuya's eyes followed you closely, monitoring your every move, every step of your feet, every blink of your eyes. it was instantly clear how anxious you looked and he felt bad, whether it was true or really just a rumour you were clearly being harassed at work because of it. he wasn't going to be like that, no matter what the outcome was, he would never allow himself to lash out at you - not until he heard your side first.
he smiled and stepped out of the car to open the door for you, gently lifting your bag off of your shoulder despite your resistance and setting it into the backseat before retuning to his seat. but he didn't move. he didn't go to start the car, he remained parked in his spot. you finally seemed to notice, lifting your head slightly, a dreadful expression on your face as you noticed his gaze locked onto your face.
takashi: ...is there something you want to tell me?
he didn't want to be mean, he wasn't trying to be but his words came out a bit too harsh. a bit too knowing. your tears instantly began to pool out and you grabbed his hand in desperation.
y/n: w-who...did someone tell you..? i-its not true, i swear, i swear swaer swear-
takashi, hands cradling your face: tell me what? ..you tell me baby, please, i need to hear it from you.
y/n, shakily: i...my boss called me to the office yesterday. you remember how i told you i'd get the bus home? it was because he wanted me to stay till later to talk to me. he said he would give me a promotion if i did well on the project...so...so i worked my hardest...i-i stayed up for nights on end- i wanted to surprise you when i finally got it...b-but when i handed him the sheets...h-he threw them to the floor stepped on them...i-i just got so angry...so angry that i wanted to pick them up..but when i did the cleaner walked in and...and everyone at work just..
mitsuyas heart broke at the sight of your tears. he knew, he knew how hard you had worked, even if you never told him it was for a promotion, you had planned to surprise him with it and yet he had the audacity to doubt you even if it was only for a second. he pulled you against his chest, hushing your tears, trying to shoulder your sorrows as he stroked your hair. after a while, he made up his mind.
takashi, pulling back gently: baby...sleep okay? we'll eat sushi tonight, 'kay? just stop crying, none of those idiots are worth it. lemme just use the bathroom quick, there's one on the first floor right?
you nodded, wiping your tears and yawning softly. he tucked your seat back and stroked your hair for a few more minutes before letting you drift off, stepping out and making his way towards the dump of a workplace which had dared cause you such sadness.
he just walked right on in, no regard for security or any other boundaries, getting into the lift, pressing the floor which he knew was your department before stalking his way towards your boss' office. on his way he noticed the girl who had spread such revolting rumours about you to him with such ease just earlier today, head practically glued to her desk out of fear. she was wise, unlike your asshole of a boss.
boss: the fuck are you? oi, get out, you didn't even kno-
mitsuya wasn't having it. he made sure to lock the door, pressing the small red button which released the curtains from their binds before stalking his way towards the boss' desk, lifting the pure mahogany and flipping it with a single hand. he was fucking pissed.
the boss stumbled back in surprise, tripping over his own feet before standing once more and attempting a jab at takashi, who smirked. he hadn't started the fight and so everything he did from now would be classed as self-defence - all thanks to the asshole of a boss swinging first.
takashi: clench your teeth, boss.
all that could be heard were a bunch of muffled whimpers and thuds before mitsuya strolled out clutching a leave slip, white shirt splattered with droplets of blood, sleeves rolled up and veins visible. his expression was relaxed, as if he hadn't beaten his wife's boss to a pulp so when he slid back into the car and handed you the quit permission letter, smiled and stroked your fringe out of your face all you could do was stare with adoration. at the man who loved peace almost as much as he loved you, yet had just beaten your boss into a heap of crap with his bare hands - because if your peace was disturbed, restoring it was his only priority.
takashi, smiling sweetly: sushi? or ramen~?
y/n, cracking a tiny smile: ramen.
