the day i stop talking about that damn painting is the day i die

miwi/byler/paintingate where mike is packing for college. he picks up the binder full of will’s drawings that he’s kept in his basement back when will disappeared all those years ago. goes through the pages while walking to his room.

by the time he’s sitting in his bed, mike’s holding one of his favorite works. one of will’s earliest portraits of will the wise and mike the brave. together, against the world. as it should be, always and forever.

mike runs his hand through the worn out paper. he hasn’t seen this one in ages but can still perfectly recall every detail. except, that little mark.

mike holds the piece in front of his lamplight, a secret message appearing right before his eyes. hidden in plain sight. a mark left behind by someone who’s written something, hard enough to scar the paper, to then be erased. like a dream, like a mistake.

he’s going insane. there’s no way.

mike moves closer to the light, picking the pen from the journal he keeps on his nightstand. the one holding back the thoughts he’s yet too scared to say, to shout. scratches the paper like a madman. the letters, now engraved with ink, screaming back at him.

‘WB + MW’

he holds the paper higher, incredulous. suddenly, his eyes can no longer focus on the version of them held in his hand but the one hanging in his wall.

‘you’re the heart’

something cataclysmic clicks. the world shifts on its axis. mike grabs his bike, rides a route he knows all too well. he needs to get to will.

Miwi with Chester!

Mike coming to Will's house for the first time and Mike is SO excited, he snuck in games and snacks and Will is so happy too, but the one who is the most excited is Chester.

Just imagine how happy that dog is now that there's TWO little kids that he get to play with and double the crumbs and bites of food too! He looks 5 years younger with his wagging tail and little excited dance as he waits for them to walk through the door.

Miwi falling asleep in Castle Byers and Chester laying with them on lookout, making sure no one is coming to mess with them or wake them.

Miwi napping with Chester everywhere, sometimes on him. The dog is just so happy, even more so when following them out on their little adventures, never straying far from the people hes decided to protect.

Them dressing him up and adding him to their D&D games, like a loyal stead or the beast to fight. Somehow Chester plays his part perfectly, until the end when he jumps on them and miwi is laughing and they're so happy.

Also, how scared and lonely Chester must've been when Will dissapeared, waiting in Castle Byers everyday or in Will's room, just waiting for him to return.

! Mike just looks at Will without saying anything when he forgets to take his medication, trying to figure out if Will noticed

Will always notices just by the way Mike looks at him. Mike thinks it’s some kind of magic;

this stays the same no matter how old they get;

! Will was one of the few people who actually believed Mike was in pain and not just being dramatic, he would cling to Will’s arm even when the pain wasn’t that bad;

! Mike sees it as simple comfort, Will sees it as quiet stubbornness;

! Will still sees Mike as strong even in his worst moments of pain;

! Mike started trying to do small things for Will more often as a way to make up for the trouble he thought he was causing.

! their parents have been called to school before for being “too attached” apparently it was distracting in class, as one teacher put it.
