Chronic pain Headcanons

! Mike is afraid he won’t be able to lead the group anymore because of his pain and moments of fragility.

(The Party would follow him even if he were in a wheelchair.)

! He twists his ankle VERY easily.

! Mike loved using compression gloves when he was younger;

they helped a lot when he had to write. But as he got older, especially in high school,he stopped and began refusing to wear them.

! He refuses to use any kind of preferred accent, which is already a rare find.

! Mike doesn’t move his arm when he has to get medication through an IV, staying completely still until a nurse removes the needle from his arm.

! Mike has no real sense of how to use the 1–10 pain scale, pain and discomfort are his normal baseline. What doctors might call a “4” is just an average day for him, so when asked, he hesitates and ends up guessing low, “maybe a 3?, even when it’s clearly worse. For him, the scale doesn’t start at zero but somewhere in the middle, so he measures things relatively instead: less bad than yesterday, worse than this morning.

! When a nurse once explains that zero means no pain at all, he pauses, genuinely confused, and admits he’s not sure he even remembers what that feels like.

! Nancy is always lending her hot water bottles to Mike. Mike already complained that she wasn't a girl with cramps to use that, but it was so relaxing that he fell asleep snuggled up against his sister.

! Post-diagnosis: Will and Nancy are the ones who force him to wear the concealed disability collar; Mike doesn't like the idea of special treatment;

* Mike even went so far as to hide the collar in various places around the house.

* The hidden disability necklace was created in 2016, and Nancy, always keeping up with updates and news, got one, taking care of him indirectly, perhaps very directly, even after they're adults.

! Nancy began researching everything related to Mike’s condition in order to better understand it, even before he received a diagnosis. She combed through books, carefully investigating every symptom he described to her.

! Nancy once argued with a doctor who claimed it was “probably nothing to worry about,” insisting that if it were truly nothing, her brother wouldn’t be crying in pain. They were eventually asked to leave the office, but at least Mike managed to receive proper medication instead of placebos.

(He thought his sister was pretty awesome for that, at least once he was off the IV.)

! Mike just looks at Will without saying anything when he forgets to take his medication, trying to figure out if Will noticed

Will always notices just by the way Mike looks at him. Mike thinks it’s some kind of magic;

this stays the same no matter how old they get;

! Will was one of the few people who actually believed Mike was in pain and not just being dramatic, he would cling to Will’s arm even when the pain wasn’t that bad;

! Mike sees it as simple comfort, Will sees it as quiet stubbornness;

! Will still sees Mike as strong even in his worst moments of pain;

! Mike started trying to do small things for Will more often as a way to make up for the trouble he thought he was causing.

! their parents have been called to school before for being “too attached” apparently it was distracting in class, as one teacher put it.

! he has chronic pain, often dismissed as “growing pains” or just excuses to skip school, even though he clearly loves studying and being in class. sometimes it feels like his parents oversimplify him.

! he’s never been great with eating, so his pain was blamed on vitamin B12 and iron deficiency (just the doctor trying to come up with something other than “growing pains”). but he still ends up crying at night, trying to find a position that doesn’t hurt, wondering what’s wrong with him.

! some days it’s just discomfort. other days he can barely walk. but he feels like he can’t say anything, because there’s no diagnosis, and the “vitamin deficiency” explanation just makes him feel like it’s his fault.

! he feels misunderstood, but can’t explain what he’s feeling, so he just ends up sulking.

! he used to point it out when his fingers lost color from poor circulation, watching his nails turn blue, but he stopped after a girl called it “gross.”

! he’s aromantic, he just doesn’t have the language for it yet. saying “I love you” feels wrong to him, like he’s lying. even when he feels deeply attached, he can’t tell if it’s love.

! he wishes there were a precise definition, something that would tell him exactly when it counts.
