Buster Keaton and Marlyn Stuart Mixed Magic - 1936
This Day in Buster…November 20, 1936
Buster Keaton, the beautiful assistant, turns this magic act into a tragic act. “Mixed Magic” is released by Educational Pictures.
Book Review: Mixed Magics by Diana Wynne Jones
★★★☆☆
In fact, Cat was fairly sure Tonino was feeling just the way Cat had felt himself when he first came to Chrestomanci Castle, and Cat could not get over the annoyance of having someone have feelings that were his.
Mixed Magics is ironically a mixed bag when it comes to stories. Some are really fun, and others... meh.
"Warlock at the Wheel" - 1 Star
This story stars the Willing Warlock from Charmed Life, and I was initially excited to see DWJ expand his character. But alas, all we get it him escaping into another world and being subjected to an entitled brat and her giant dog while he tries to steal a car. Not my cup of tea.
"Stealer of Souls" - 4 stars
Cat Chant and Tonino Montana meet in this story, and it's so great! They struggle to get along at first, but when they are kidnapped by an evil enchanter, they must ban together to survive. This story gives a peek into the later lives of Mordecai Roberts, Miss Rosalie, and Gabriel de Witt from The Lives of Christopher Chant, which makes this even better than I expected.
"Carol Oneir's Hundredth Dream" - 3 stars
The daughter of Oneir (one of Christopher Chant's classmates in The Lives of Christopher Chant) is a professional dreamer - she's so good that her dreams are recorded and sold for others to experience! But for some reason her dream characters aren't cooperating for her hundredth dream... The concept and execution of this is quite interesting, but unfortunately Carol's a bit of a brat.
"The Saga of Theare" - 4 stars
Taking place in a world where gods operate in exact order, this world is disrupted when a prophesized Sage is born who will tip the scales towards chaos. This one was fascinating to read about, and my main complaint is that I wish it had been longer. The story easily could have been turned into a novella or novel, and I think this would have actually benefited from that. However, it's still a great story.
