MJ Lallo - Take Me With You (80s compilation on Seance Centre)
Take Me With You is a revelatory voyage through the captivating universe of voice artist and poet MJ Lallo. The works on this 2LP compilation were all recorded in her home studio between 1982 and 1997, primarily using drum computer, synth and her own voice processed through a Yamaha SPX 90 digital effects unit. They range from wordless harmonizer mantras and primitive drum computer meditations, to psychedelic latin dance-floor anthems and synth-drenched end-of-the-nighters.
Lallo has created her own inimitable galaxy of sound where the human voice, liberated from the constraints of language and abstracted using digital technology, is able to explore the outer realms of human expression, like Joan La Barbara with an Eventide and a new-age sensibility. Although Lallo’s flight path is distinctly her own, her journey converges with other travellers as diverse as Jon Hassell, Laraaji, Stereolab, William Aura, Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, Gertrude Stein and even Terry Gilliam (whose film Brazil was a big influence on Lallo). Like something beamed in from another planet, Lallo’s work is both fascinatingly strange and strangely familiar, and will leave a lasting impression for lightyears to come. Double gatefold LP, remastered DMM pressing.
Release date: September 7th
Okay, yikes. It has been... exactly a month since my last Tumblr post. (Well, exactly a month to the day, not to the hour. Actually, it’s technically been a few hours short of a month, I guess.) Heck. My high school teaching job has just been wearing on me more and more. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to get anything done, partly because the teaching job is taking up so much time, and partially because even when I’m not actively engaged in work directly related to the teaching job, I’m still stressed enough that I’m finding it hard to work on anything else.
So... yeah, things are pretty terrible right now, as far as my productivity goes. Not only am I falling increasingly farther behind with the new character posts for @terasterrace, but I haven’t done the comic for d24 that was supposed to be up a week and a half ago (heck, I haven’t even finished putting up the previous comic, which was, alas, not by any stretch of definition done in 24 hours). I haven’t made any significant progress lately on the storyboards I was hoping to submit to @cartoonhangover‘s GO! Cartoons (and I have no idea how much longer submissions will be open... if indeed they still are). I am behind on everything, and I am getting pretty much nothing done.
There is, of course, a light at the end of the tunnel, but the end of the tunnel is presently about two and a half months away. Still... come June, I will be so much happier. I mean, I’m not going to be any less busy than I am now, but I’m going to be busy with creative projects I want to work on, rather than with grading papers and preparing lessons that nobody pays attention to anyway (I am awful at classroom management).
In the meantime... I’ve still got some things going on toward my creative goals, I guess. Last Saturday I attended a workshop on selling an animated series, presented by Rita Street of @radarcartoons, executive producer of Ruby Gloom, among other projects (and former publisher of Animation Magazine). To be honest, I’d been a little hesitant about going, thinking I’d be in over my head (as much as I would like to someday sell an animated series, yeah, I am nowhere near at that level right now), but I do think I got a lot out of it, and I’m glad I went. I thought I’d be too intimidated to say anything or ask any questions, but I ended up... er, probably talking rather more than my share.
(One thing Rita Street recommended at the workshop: Have more than one concept ready to pitch! In fact, as many as possible, so if one is too similar to a project a studio already has, or for some other reason isn’t what they’re looking for right now, you have other concepts to present. Huh. I’d have thought it was better to focus on one or two things, but I guess not... right now I have what I think is one solid concept for a kids’ series and one for an adult animated comedy series, but... you know, I’m going to come up with some more. Though maybe not till June.)
Also at the workshop, I met and spoke briefly with voiceover artist, producer, and casting director MJ Lallo, who mentioned that she was starting new beginner classes soon. So last night I attended her Introduction to Voiceover class, and I’m seriously considering taking her Beginning Voiceover Commercial & Animation class starting in April... though this would mean missing out for five weeks on a Thursday night filmmaker’s group meeting I like to attend.
So, anyway, I guess it’s not that I have nothing going on... just not nearly as much as I’d like. But come June... seriously, June can’t come soon enough.
