team ricky … #3021: lee mijoo
with teammates … wendy, seokjin
song … empty by winner ♬
like their first team challenge, the happiness of coming in first is short-lived again when they’re told about the teammate swap. truth be told, she had thought that this would happen sometime at least once during this season of mgas, but she didn’t expect it to happen so far into the competition. she wonders if things might have been a whole lot more different if it happened before, way before the teams had created friendships and bonds while pouring blood, sweat, and tears into their performances together. changing teams around now, this far into the competition, just sounds cruel and once again, mijoo inwardly curses at mnet.
it’s sad to see soyou go, the person that had made sure to take care of the team and its teammates when they couldn’t do it themselves, but the new member, seokjin, seems like a friendly person. it’s not fair to take things out on him, so she tries her best to welcome him with open arms, because she knows she wouldn’t want soyou to be treated in a bad way when she went over to her new team. she treats seokjin the way she would want soyou to be treated on her new team, because at the end of the day, this whole teammate change thing is not their fault. she understands this, but it takes some convincing for wendy; mijoo has to squat down next to a grumpy wendy one day, gently brushing the younger’s hair out of her face and tucking them behind her ear before beginning with a soft and tender, “hey…” like she would, taking to her little siblings. “you know it’s not his fault that he’s here, right? and it’s not his fault that soyou unnie had to go…” and it’s about all she needs to say for wendy to agree. she knows wendy feels the same.
however, she can’t speak for ricky, who seems to have some kind of history with seokjin, a history they both decide to remain silent on. she doesn’t know what kind of past they might have together ( nor does she want to pry it out of them; it’s their business, not hers ), but mijoo strongly hopes that they would patch things up as much as they can, as quickly as they can, because they would need to be on friendly terms to be on a team together.
as they bond and work together, mijoo’s mind drifts off to soyou again and how she might be doing, and her head is then plagued with the thought of how she herself might have done on another team. she loves her team and its teammates– she hopes no one would ever get the wrong idea if she was to tell them this– and her heart has always belonged to nova and nell all these years, but the thought of being on another team had admittedly been there at the back of her head at some point in time. whether she gets signed or not, she wants to think of the mgas as a special experience; she wants to try and do new things with it that she hasn’t done before, including working with different teams from different companies. but perhaps that was a little too much to expect from a survival audition show.
the whole audition process constantly brings her back to the time she was scouted by sphere at hongdaefest, and how she didn’t even get a chance to show them what she has before having to run out because of family. she doesn’t regret it, of course, because family always comes first to her, but she really must be human too since she can’t help but wonder how things could have been changed, had she gone through with that audition. she wonders if things with sphere may be a little too late now to turn back ( because what if they remember her for running out of her audition like that ), and when she thinks about how someone must not have wanted her on their team and it’s why she wasn’t moved, she can’t help but feel like that perhaps things really are a little too late.
come performance night, she peeks out from backstage before shaking a fist lightly at both her teammates, with a soft, “hwaiting.” she walks on stage with them, getting into position to, once again, show everyone what team nova had been working on. they’re not too far from the end now, and she may not be able to stand on stage again for a long while when it’s all over. she plans to make best of it, taking in a breath and letting it out in a soft ( almost inaudible ) noise to prepare herself.
hwaiting, lee mijoo.
it’s over, my love
where are you?
she starts the song off for herself and the group, seokjin coming in after her and wendy not too long afterwards. she doesn’t forget to make eye contact with the camera as ricky always advised them, pretending as though it’s a person as she pours her heart out through singing. it feels a little odd to begin where they do, but with only a minute and a half to show everyone what they have, those are the decisions they must make.
she had admittedly worried at first as to whether or not seokjin’s voice would fit wendy’s and her own; she already knew she and wendy’s voices worked well together, but everything was a first with seokjin as a teammate. however, the moment they had rehearsed the song together for the first time, all of the worry melted away; seokjin had a wonderful voice ( she already knew from watching team taeyeon but ) and thankfully blended well with wendy’s and her own. it sounds even better, mijoo thinks, as she hears him sing through his mic, on stage together.
i’ll probably feel less and less as time goes by
i don’t miss you, i just long for you
the rest of the song, wendy leads and mijoo follows with her adlibs, soon reaching the high notes that she had practiced for the past few days.
“just a memory, i was happy,” she sings with seokjin before wendy takes over again, singing back and forth with seokjin before mijoo ends with “let’s meet again.”
the words of this song reminds her of the one they sang last round, and the feelings that come with the words is the same for mijoo as she takes her teammates hands to take a bow. the people she has met through this season of mga are all great, and she hopes to meet them again someday, even after it’s all over.
