On the racism MJ/Zendaya (still) faces

So, it shouldn’t be too long before the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer gets released. Therefore I’d like to humbly try to provide help to fight the racism these ladies are victims of, by pointing out what I think are the most reccuring patterns in the commentaries MJ/Zendaya receives. This idea came to me as I remembered I had fun screen shoting messy comments at some point and keeping them in a file just in case I’d need to prove a point, and I guess this time has come

Disclaimer: Sadly, these are in no way edits. Real people, type this stuff online. I'm aware a bunch are just really dying for a redhead, fiery and all that, Mary Jane on big screen, and that a bunch are just jealous fangirls thinking they stand a chance with someone who doesn’t even know they exist, but also none of these are reasons to be borderline, or full on racist. Some usernames are masked because I thought it wasn't that deep but still dumb, some are lucky they didn't appear, and some appear because I think that if one has the nerves to make these kind of statements, probably some exposing can not hurt them

I have no screen shots for this, but the reactions to MJ saying “Therefore I have value?” in the first Far From Home trailer. In which the NEXT second she says she is joking, but you know, gotta make this an issue.I read with my own two eyes that it would "put Peter in a bad mood", or "I hate how feminist she is, makes me hate her and the actress". For this latter point, notice, Brie Larson has been getting the stupidest hate for saying she wanted her press tour to not only be white as men interviewers and being a feminist

But still, let us not be delusional, this remains about race.

3. Language: Let’s see: "Gross, "ew", "too black", “woc aren’t attractive”, “sick to my stomach”, “no chemistry”, “ (bonus: letting a single character ruin your whole love for Peter…..) Oh and bad attitude” “rude as fuck”, “basic-ass negative”, “forced”, “NO Chemistry”, “she made fun of him”. I could go on but it’s not in these posts, but you get me. Like what is gross? What is the standard for chemistry? Is calling him a "loser" truly the end of the world or is it all a reach because MJ doesn't cater to hegemonic feminity, so it makes her rudw? (S/O to Brie Larson again, who is having her whole body language analyzed to prove her co stars hate her/is being compared to every actress who has played a super hero to prove that it's ok to dislike her because she is not "nice" compared to the hegemonic standard these x other actresses correspond to.) Btw, “I love Zendaya but” is a classic too, usually prefaces nonsense

4. "I love x character who is a poc/x black character so this take is invalid”. Wrong. Not being racist towards one race is not a stop from being anti black, furthermore in this case, it is not a stop from not falling into mysoginoir. Very simply, “mysoginy directed towards black womenwhere race and gender both play roles in bias.” It’s all systemic. Loving Ned doesn't prevent you from being anti black. Men are privileged over women and then it’s race coming into play, always. Zendaya/MJ is a black woman, so she is less worthy of everything, and so it makes little sense in these people’s minds that Peter would like her, let alone that he’d want to date her. Ned is a man, so he is not a threat to fangirls’ fantasies, in which you’ll also notice they treat Ned/Jacob Batalon better than MJ (well, whatever "better" is when you aren’t a skinny white boy….).

5. "Liz was better". (Very often is the pov of, wait for it, white girls (often male fans would rather not even have Spidey in a relationship all short, so yeah). Because she was a fleshed out character absolutely not solely designed as a plot device to the Toomes reveal, or because she embodied the behavior that is deemed as THE one women should have if they want a man's attention and so it is easier to project yourself into her than it is to do so with MJ? That was rhetorical. Gender socialization. Hegemonic feminity. Be white, nice, docile, so very sweet and ready to please, or you won't find a man/job! But men can be shitty and yet will be called badass or witty. Think here for a sec, how many people who dislike Michelle for being rude, are into TONY STARK/Irondad? And God knows I love Tony, but as if he is a saintl? From his pre cave antics to the way he was with Peter in Homecoming and some other stuff in between. Also, he would fucking love MJ lol? What differentiates them so much at the end of the day, from the constant sarcasm to the obvious need to hide their feelings behind it? And that she clearly loves Peter, as did Tony but it took him until Endgame to show it. What makes it ok for him to not have shown it from the jump but makes MJ undeserving of character developpement and of Peter falling in love with her in Far From Home after an obviously planned character developpement? The fact that Tony is white and male. That's it

Candice Patton/Iris in The Flash, hell, Serena Williams in tennis, are all examples of this

Another thing that does not appear here but that exists, related to MJ or not, is attempting to erase Zendaya’s blackness to deny these reactions could possibly be racially motivated. “She is half white”. Or whatever headass take of the likes. But we know those 50% are not the reason why she is “Not the real MJ”. So which is it? Is she too black or not white enough? The answer is: Both. And both are racist statements, period. The people saying “they should have just named her Mary Jane” are also the same who were all up Zendaya and Marvel’s ass when her casting news dropped, bet

In conclusion, racism has many more faces else than explicitly using the n word, exactly like these microgressions above

They are not ok, because they stem from systematic racism and oppression, including negative stereotyping. This idea that black women are aggressive, not desirable, and not beautiful enough etc is nothing new but it still does not make it tolerable. Nobody who is racist or using a microagression, consciously or not, will actually ever admit it when called out on it. So dare to open that can of worms if you can. And for those who have been called out, please actually listen to why this statement is being made, especially if it's by a POC. That way you should technically never face this accusation again because you'd have listened and learned, instead of not listening and learning and finding yourself getting called names every turn, because you refused the lesson you could have gotten at the last turn

Spider-Man: Far From Home comes out on July 2nd and its press tour is starting today. I'd like to encourage everyone to above all, provide Zendaya/MJ the support she is going to need online, as she will this time get more to chew in this movie than in Homecoming, and yet people will still find reasons to complain, but also to not forget to pay attention in the future, to the frequency of use of these patterns when talking about MJ/Zendaya and to not let them stop you from defending these ladies. Let Z (and Marvel too while at it) know you have their back. She is a very attuned to social media lady, she would not miss the memo, nor would Marvel

Expecting to get to cruise the Spideychelle tags quietly only to bump into some bogus takes. Unless you use the person as coping mechanism, confining into someone/falling in love with someone after suffering a loss is not toxcicity. This is not what is happening with PeterMJ and you know it, don't be clowns. This is a superhero movie, not a fanfic

6 years passed sinc Hoco. 6 years. (In which between Hoco and IW, no doubt Peter MJ got closer even if we didn't see it (They pulled the same thing with Starmora and Lovebug....) Reminder that Peter and all the Hoco remaining kids were dusted too. Which all the more is telling that there is no actual time to build up Spideychelle like that. Be it in this movie or in SM3. The latter will probably introduce the Sinister6 and more, tell me they would care for their relationship with such comics material needing screen time and tell me you don't want to have more important things going on in SM3 than romance? Right. But mostly, imagine that you die. You die for 5 years. You get brought back to life, something that should be impossible. What are you gonna do after that? Try to move on, love people more than you ever did because you realize how lucky you are that you got this second chance. Sure, some would feel so weirded out that they'd not know how to move on, but that is what should be done. This ain't no rocket science

"Peter needs to grieve", sure, but you expect a Spider-Man movie to be depressing for how long exactly, out of 2 hours? Before asking Spideychelle to be realistic, you may start by being realistic yourself about wanting 1h of this film to be spent over Peter crying about Tony. I get not wanting it to come out of nowhere but also don't kid yourselves. 99% romantic MCU relationships happened fast. Also for this to be the line where you draw suspension of disbelief/meta just because they didn't interact in Hoco? Frankly weird considering all the stuff you were perfectly ok with in those 22 movies. Also if they focused more on them than rest you'd find a way to be mad too because what about Tony and what about this and that so pick a struggle ngl And maybe just watch the movie first and then cry

If Spideychelle is rushed, at worst you will be seething while MJ and Zendaya win. And at best, they will not be rushed but lbr, you will still be seething about that one tiny thing that could have been better while MJ and Zendaya win. So In summary, Spideychelle will thrive, Zendaya and MJ will win and you can stay jumping hoops to justify not wanting it to happen. And Peter won, too. Because that's one strong, independent, badass, compassionate and smart girl to have by your side

Ok but this very clear contrast between everyone pressuring Peter into being Spider-Man Vs MJ not doing so all through Far From Home? Chef kiss

Better yet, she doesn't give a damn about Spider-Man. I thought her asking Flash why is he so obsessed was purely to get the "Sup dick wad?" quip going, and maybe it was but after she asks and Flash answers, she shakes her head, practically annoyed and peaks at Peter, as if she was thinking "This better not make you feel like the hero is more important than yourself!"

I mean, Flash said Spider-Man inspires him to be a better man, that's pretty cool considering the guy? But she literally does not care

Peter Parker and Spider-Man are the same thing for MJ, except she likes Peter way more. Because she saw him be the nicest guy in the room before he was bitten. She knows he would help anyone in need if he could even if he was not a superhero. She knows Peter could inspire anyone to be a better man, including Flash. And all of that? She likes it "better broken". Flaws and all, broken bits and all, she doesn't like it masked and invincible. She doesn't love him because he is Spider-Man

She likes him human. And that ladies and gents, you better admit that it is the MJ we deserve, no matter how she looks

25 reasons to love Michelle Jones

1. She has no filter and deadpans. If you like Tony Stark, real bold of you to have a problem with this specific trait of hers

3. She is so observant that she knows Peter is Spider-Man. While nobody has it figured out. Not even Ned had it figured out. And yet she also says nothing. A clever and caring woman

5. She doesn’t read just any books. 'Of Human Bondage' is about an orphan who has to live with his aunt and uncle and also falls in love with a girl that doesn’t always reciprocate his feelings. Reminds you of someone? Then later in the bus: ‘Invitation to a beholden’, is the story of a man who gets imprisoned and is unable to blend in the society he lives in because he is gnostic. So 1. She wants to know how Peter feels 2. She doesn’t feel like she blends in the society she lives in

7. Her looks say “screw your idea of what is "well dressed” and pretty". She will look however tf she wants. No makeup at 15 yo is absolute realistic even if society stays lowering the age at which you should start looking like a doll

8. Her purple hair streak. Why purple? Is it her favorite color? Does it mean something specific to her? Was it an attempt from her to get noticed by her classmates without it being too obvious?

9. She wanted to/did some light protesting in front of one of the embassies in DC. At 15 yo. Jot it down

10. She made the acadec team win the competition. We don’t see her answer questions be it at school or during the trip but clearly she has the brains to be successful by putting little to no efforts into training

24. She is a gift to meta culture. I wrote all of this based on roughly 3 mins screen time tops with deleted scenes and non included footage

Btw see this is how you hype a character you like. Coming up with original shit and metas and fics and fanarts. Running down a character you dislike does nothing, shocker

25. She is gorgeous. Yes that is a valid reason, y'all implicitly pull it with white characters all time & it is really hilarious she was supposed to not be attractive. One of the most unrealistic thing in this movie

Bonus: It’s because it’s Zendaya

And ultimately, because she is 'MJ'. Had she been white and a red hair, big silence about how "it's just because" since y'all would have decided that as SUCH a lore character, she'd have been deserving of support. Lots of screen time or not. Why can't y'all do the same thing here? Is why "it's because it's Zendaya" is going to lowkey be a thing, indeed. Deny it all you want, we know this is a matter of race. She still is and was racially attacked the day the news of her casting dropped, while she is an amazing talent that had been looking for a movie role and did what she had to do to get cast before she even left the room. Tom Holland's words, not mine. She auditioned for this role, you didn't. She got it and conveyed all of the above in 2 mins and 57 seconds. Michelle is a breath of fresh air both in her characterisation and interpretation of a female character and a love interest and that is why she was so instantly loved. We love not only one but two icons. Let it be known
