Mary Jane found out who Spider-Man was the day Uncle Ben died, when she looked out the window of her Aunt's Anna's house and saw Peter running in and Spidey crawling out. She kept his secret for years because she was terrified, both that he was like her father, hiding his true self under a mask (and that his true self wasn't a good person), and, as they became closer friends, that he'd get hurt. It was one of the reasons she refused to marry him when he first asked - how could she marry someone who didn't trust her enough to tell her something as big as being Spider-Man?

Even though she's one of Marvel's most famous female characters, the first person that comes to many minds when they hear "Spider-Man's girlfriend" and has appeared in the comics for over 45 years, a lot of people still don't know much about Mary Jane Watson, and tend to judge and dismiss her for seemingly being superficial and a "party girl", but the girl's been through a lot. I gathered 15 of the most tragic events in her life, to show that, no matter how someone seems on the outside, there is always a story behind it all.

MJ's parents, Philip and Madeline, got married right after high school and traveled across the country so that he could pursue his academic career. Philip became a college professor, but had dreams of being the next great writer, without possessing the talent for it. Unable to accept his own failings, he turned his fury on his family. Madeline had been abused for years, but when Mary Jane's older sister, Gayle, was hit by their father over expensive ballet lessons she was taking she had enough and finally left him, taking their daughters with her, and had to rely on relatives to have a place to stay from then on.
