MJ's parents, Philip and Madeline, got married right after high school and traveled across the country so that he could pursue his academic career. Philip became a college professor, but had dreams of being the next great writer, without possessing the talent for it. Unable to accept his own failings, he turned his fury on his family. Madeline had been abused for years, but when Mary Jane's older sister, Gayle, was hit by their father over expensive ballet lessons she was taking she had enough and finally left him, taking their daughters with her, and had to rely on relatives to have a place to stay from then on.
