ATLA OC Week Day 1: Bending
Kyrna my beloved
Southern Water Tribe bender
Same age as Hakoda and Bato
Taken in a raid along with his mother when he was ~16, came home when prisoners were liberated ~20 years later
Was a first love of sorts of Bato before the raid (fic here :) )
Kyrna, along with other liberated SWT prisoners, has a hard time adjusting back to life in the South Pole, let alone relearning the basics of waterbending since he was taken so young. He has no immediately family left due to the war and struggles with finding meaning for the first few years.
Kyrna's relationship with his bending develops with his family, so I guess I must mention that he has a daughter with another prison survivor, both of whom are also water benders. When she was born his recovery was still tenuous and he had trouble living up to his new responsibilities on top of taking care of himself, and he becomes estranged for a while. They had a complicated and distant relationship for the first few years of his daughter's life.
she comes to live with him as a teen to learn more advanced waterbending techniques from the benders in his village, and helping her learn (beyond what he had ever bothered to learn, even) really brings them together and helps him accept and move on from the darker parts of his history with his own bending.
He enjoys kayaking, being alone and surrounded by water and building up muscles he lost. He also enjoys helping the older women in the village, being a gossip and embarrassing his daughter <3
