Sunday, May 5th is National Awareness Day for Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women. It's a day for those who have been murdered, as well as those who still have not been found or returned safely to their homes. Here are some things everyone should know: Native American women are 10 times more likely to be murdered than any other group of people in America. 84% of Native American women will experience physical violence against them in their lives. Native women experience rape at a rate 2.5 times higher than that of white women 56% experience sexual violence, and, of them over 90% percent have experienced said violence at the hands of a non-tribal member. Non-native men (the overwhelming majority of cases) who sexually assault or rape Native American women on reservations can’t be arrested or prosecuted by tribal authorities. The Department of Justice does not have a database for missing and murdered native women. Wear red on Sunday to stand in solidarity with our missing and murdered sisters. Post about #MMIW on Sunday, talk with people you know about some of the things mentioned above to spread awareness of the current epidemic in this country. #NationalDayofAwareness #MMIWNationalDayofAwareness #MMNWG #MMIW #NoMoreStolenSisters #NotInvisible https://www.instagram.com/p/BxFNT1vJXSJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16thwg4zk46jf
