Here’s my pitch for Stoneward Moash:
- its the order of foot soldiers, Moash originally wanted to be a normal soldier (he was never in it to be special or in command)
- their second ideal is “I will step forward when others step back”. Moash is the one character we see step forward and say that the singers are right. you can argue whether you agree with him or not, but the fact remains that he takes a stand that few other humans do. He strives to accomplish the task of a changed world where the singers are in charge
- their third ideal is “I will be the foundation upon which others can build”. Moash absolutely views himself as part of a larger whole (that whole being the cause of the singers). He knows he’s not the most important guy he doesn’t want to be the most important guy. Also he likes manual labor and literally building foundations so you know
- during peacetime, stonewards were historically explorers. Moash was a caraveener before he went to the Shattered Plains
- also historically stonewards were stubborn to a fault and filled with resolve. do I even have to say it
- this is also thematically interesting in parallel to Bridge Four because the stonewards and windrunners are the two main military orders, but the stonewards are grounded in the earth with their surges as opposed to the windrunners who end up detached from the earth literally. this could be juicy
- the stoneward fourth ideal could be something Moash struggles for: it’s about self-care and having a supportive network, something he absolutely doesn’t have yet (and has in fact lost). so stoneward Moash trying to rebuild himself a support network could be beautiful
I have a lot of issues with how Moash is written in book 5, and at this point I've pretty much given up any hope that his arc will go in a way that I personally will find satisfying in the future.
That being said, I am interested in the reaction he gets from some characters in universe. Particularly Bridge 13, who now wear red and gold and have sworn an oath of vengeance against him in a book where the big bad literally becomes an incarnation of Retribution.
If this is leading to an arc where characters are forced to realize "hating Moash this much makes you stupid" then I will take it.
not to start moashcourse but I saw some people talking about it on Instagram so technically they started it first. but. do moash haters not realize how ridiculous it is to say moash is irredeemable when he exists in a series that is fundamentally about second chances and the possibility of redemption. Dalinar war crimes wife killing Kholin gets a second chance. Elhokar bad king genocide starting Kholin (almost) gets a second chance. Shallan parent murdering apocalypse starting Davar gets a second chance. And the list goes on! Even the oath breaking comrade abandoning heralds get second chances. All of them get second chances but not Moash. “Yes this is the Redemption and Second Chances Archive, where no one is defined by their worst moment, nobody is too far gone to be redeemed, and everybody is allowed to take the next right step. Except ☝️ this one guy I hate”
Now that Kaladin has an Honorspear and Syl might be the largest sliver of Honor (as the Stormfather's daughter) what are the odds that Moash bonds her and becomes a Bondsmith?
To put things plainly, the reason why I don’t hate Moash is because theres bigger fish to fry.
Moash is a little shit because he has endured systematic abuse for decades and finally has an outlet. Taravangian is a little shit for the love of the game.
Moash gets pity from me, but Taravangian needs to be put in a timeout.
Elhokar fans: Noooo he's literally innocent he didn't know what he was doing when he got Moash's grandparents killed and tried to get Kaladin executed he's just a little guyyyy and he was getting better 🥺
Moash fans: He did that shit
