You were reeling with the news. 5 Hunters dead, all because Mobius didn’t listen to you. The Variant had been laying in wait using an ambush to his advantage, just like you said, but Mobius sent in the Hunters anyways and now 5 people are dead and the Variant is still on the loose.
“You should’ve listened to me.” You whisper, tears pricking at the corner of your eyelids, your voice becoming shaky with emotion. “I said it wasn’t safe.”
“Really?” The sound of Mobius’ own hoarse voice makes you lift your head. It’s obvious from the tears pooling on his waterline he’s holding back tears but you can’t really bring yourself to feel bad for him right now. “You choose now to say I told you so? That’s what’s important to you?”
You can feel rage spark in your chest, turning your grief into anger. You stand quickly, slamming your hand down on the table. “This is your fault! They wouldn’t be dead if you had listened to me so yes, this is what’s important!”
Mobius shakes his head, standing and turning to walk away but you grab him by the shoulder, turning him back to face you. “Don’t you dare walk away from this! Their blood is on your hands, do you understand me Mobius?! Because you had to be some macho man and prove you were right, because you couldn't listen to me just this one time!”
Tears are now flowing freely down his cheeks, and he brings a hand up to cover his mouth as a small noise passes his lips. This stops you. You had seen Mobius close to tears before, working with him for this long means you had seen almost every emotion Mobius could experience, but you had never seen him this upset. His orders had also never caused this much loss before, though.
“Hunter E-19 said she could handle it. I told her your warning, but she said her team could handle a rogue Variant. So I gave the go ahead. And I am so sorry that they died, I wish I could go back and stop them but you know that’s against the rules.” He explains through his tears.
Immediately all of your rage is gone. He had warned them, but they said they could handle it. It wasn’t his fault at all, he had done what he was supposed to and yet here you were laying all the blame on him. You feel guilt for blaming him bubble up inside you, and you quickly pull him forward so you can cradle him to your chest.
“I’m so sorry, Mobius. I shouldn’t have assumed-”
He shakes his head, gripping tightly to the fabric of the back of your suit jacket. “You didn’t know.”
Things fall silent then, and you decide the least you can do is hold him until he’s ready to let you go.
