Two of my Lorn creatures, a mock dragon and a false dragon.
I’ve always had a very loosely-defined idea of what makes a “dragon” in my head, and most of my dragon designs reflect that. When it comes to dragons in my headworlds, what is or is not a dragon is based purely on an organ called the “cauldron”.
The cauldron is an organ that branches off from the esophagus. All true dragons have some form of this organ, though for many species of dragon it has become vestigial. The cauldron breaks down various minerals and produces a flammable gas that ignites when regurgitated.
How the cauldron functions varies between species of dragons, with some producing an oily substance or merely acrid smog. For some dragons that have a vestigial cauldron (such as mock dragons) they still have the instinctual desire to ingest minerals for their cauldron. This sometimes results in some form of smoke being expelled.
False dragons, though resembling true dragons, are merely reptiles. It is a name given to a loosely-defined group of reptiles that have taken on draconic traits through convergent evolution. Some of them have evolved to mimic specific species of dragon, while others have taken on their traits to better compete with dragons in their natural habitats. Rudimentary flight is not unheard of in false dragons, though gliding is significantly more common.

Mock dragons have a love for all things related to people. These dragons will form towns and cultures that mimic those of people-- or will simply try to integrate into their towns directly. They have a great memory for language and speak in trilling voices. They are typically good-natured and easily swayed by trinkets.
