That what is not.
Tell me, why would someone pretend to be poor? There are few things as despicable, I find, as rich people trying to pretend that they are poor or somehow still one of us despite their wealth. Being poor is vile, you feel constantly vulnerable, you can never relax for a single second, every letter landing on the doormat has the weight of a lead lined coffin and every mystery phone call is the…

Full thoughts on his work to follow, but VIII director Rian Johnson seems like an awesome dude. He’s brilliant on the audio commentary for Looper, with the highlight being him and Joseph Gordon-Levitt putting on their best cringey cockney accents (think Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins) to mock token Brit Emily Blunt.
We should all talk like Noel Coward, not Noel Gallagher.

Cor Blimey! Virginia luv, you left one of your souvenir postcards behind!
Here's a video of Nigel Kennedy at the Proms. I ended up watching this because of a discussion in my linguistics tutorial. We were talking about dialect and accent change in populations, and how often when individuals are talking to people of "higher" status, they change their speech to become more in line with the standard. People rarely accommodate downward, and Kennedy is a rare example of this. His stage manner and accent have changed a lot over the years, and everywhere, as well as in the Youtube comments, there are people deriding his clothing and "mockney" accent.
I have a different opinion. In the video of him when he was younger, a few things strike me - one was that he was painfully awkward, he has quite the speech impediment (some kind of lisp), and his basic manner hasn't really changed. He still has the same awkwardness and quirky timing, but he appears to be a lot more comfortable, and the speech impediment still seems to be there, but it's buried in his accent.
The other idea the commenters seem to have is that one should only ever want to change one's accent "upward". I disagree that his accent is unnatural. I ended up reading an interview with him on the Daily Fail, and he said that his mother was very particular about how he spoke, wanting him to sound as educated as possible. I think he likely did adopt it consciously at first, but it probably felt like a better fit to him, since apparently he never really felt like he fit in with the high classical world. Everybody uses their speech to telegraph their identities, and I think the people who mock him are taking his violation of the norms personally. People do that, though.
As to his actual playing: It's honest, and I often got lost in his interpretations. To me, I have no doubt that he's in the moment, and feeling every bit of it. I also like the lack of preciousness, it's coming out as it's coming out, and he doesn't seem to be at all concerned with dividing phrases into their smallest possible components, and making sure everybody knows it.
That said, it's too rough for me, and I don't like how he yanks the bow at the ends of phrases. He also seems to have tons of pressure in both his bow arm and his left hand. His bow arm is practically rigid, and I bet that tension is responsible for how frequently his bow skates and skips across the strings. So, if I was teaching and showing this video, I'd consider his technique to be avoided, but his authenticity on stage to be emulated.
