hot take
if tui really wanted deathbringer to be a likable character, she should’ve shown more scenes that don’t portray him with glory. the winglet imo was poorly done, and fairly rushed, and didn’t show any of the emotion nor character development that I felt it should’ve. deathbringer was with glory in 99.999% of his scenes (not including the (bad) winglet) and most of the time he just served as a funny love interest who, against all odds, started to like glory. there were brief bits where we saw a change in how he acted, but both related completely to glory: the more prominent one when glory saved him from the volcano, the less memorable one from when she made herself a target for the nightwings and he worried for her. because all of the changes in emotion related to glory, it made him feel even more one-dimensional even with these brief moments of character development, due to it all being tied back to glory. deathbringer is a complex character: he was abused, brainwashed, and reformed. tui ended up making him completely and utterly devoted to glory, in more than one way, eventually reducing him to the same idea of a character trait: charming and clever. you could argue he also has “protective” as a personality trait, but due to this being so amplified in the ways it did, it served negatively still. deathbringer had a lot of potential, but all of his book time was crammed into developing romance with glory, which just flattened his character. looking at his backstory and his starting personality in the story, he had a lot of potential. but all of it was wasted. in this essay I will-

a few thoughts on the future of the rainwing tribe from mod eaz
i honestly think the possible ideas for this tribe are. really interesting??? it’s probably the most beloved tribe in the fandom, after nightwings of course but. im just gonna toss my own worthless thoughts down
so, as of right now (that i’m posting this), the tribe is doing pretty okay with glory as the queen and i believe the nightwings still live in the rainforest.
now, let’s look a bit farther into the future for these fellas: i think it’d be pretty realistic for the nightwings to eventually find another home. there are a few interesting fan interpretations for where exactly they’d go, but i think they’d go somewhere. but i’m not discussing them right now, so let’s just say: in this hypothetical future, the nightwings have found a different permanent home, and function with their own queen/ruling system. there are some exceptions of course, like deathbringer, which would stay behind.
Now, of course, since glory is relatively young, she’ll live for awhile, and i doubt we’d see any of the dragonets of destiny die in the series, or, at least, from old age, but let’s say tui didn’t decide to somehow kill one of them.
eventually, of course, glory would die of old age- who would be her successor? the obvious answer is firefly, glory and deathbringer’s daughter (presuming that the future where firefly exists will come true.) however, i feel that if in this future, since nightwings are gone and living in a completely different place, it wouldn’t make much sense for firefly to take rule, due to being half nightwing. even if it did seem fit for her to take rule, i have a feeling glory wouldn’t wish that kind of stress on her daughter. and, as we know, the rainwings dont duel for positions in royalty, so it’d have to be either A.) glory hands down her power or B.) they have a peaceful competition, similar to the one that was between magnificent and glory.
however, again, glory doesn’t seem like the type to want to pass that sort of thing onto her daughter- i imagine she’s the type to want her to have a relatively stress-free life. besides, i think another idea is more interesting.
so, bloodlines for royalty are iffy in the series right now: glory didn’t seem opposed to becoming queen of the rainwings before finding out she was related to grandeur, so i doubt she really cares about bloodlines, especially after the whole fiasco with thorn becoming the queen of the sandwings despite having no relations to the royal bloodline.
leading from this, i think the idea of her picking a successor from her tribe would be a more interesting idea.
i’ll elaborate: as we know, the rainwings for awhile were rather lazy and uncaring of both the other dragons in their tribe as well as the affairs of other tribes outside of the rainforest. it took awhile of glory attempting to toughen up her tribe and teach them to be less ignorant, as well as having tsunami help with training dragons to be better at fighting. as of what we know, glory has a large pack of guards following her around at all times. some other changes include the better care for dragonets, the better knowledge of tribe history, the better knowledge of other tribes in general, etc. now, of course, there are still some changes to be made for this tribe that will probably be worked towards.
from what we see, even now the guards following around glory (not including deathbringer) act, understandably, rather inexperienced and unmotivated, even if they are so desperate to protect their queen. we also have examples such as the very flawed mudpit prison that they use.
i imagine throughout her life, glory would help shape the tribe more and more, until the tribe to a point even relies on her for keeping it together. she’d probably get ways in terms of helping the rainwings.
however, lets say she dies, and lets return to the idea that she picks a successor, more specifically, a rainwing successor she sees fit.
as i mentioned, the tribe would probably grow to rely on glory, since she was the dragon that made them- well- yknow, more like a tribe. she changed the way every rainwing lived.
the tribe would’ve probably been well up to that point, thriving, even, due to the endless resources of the rainwings, the peaceful nature of the rainwings, and glory’s rule.
but lets say then, glory dies, and she has a rainwing she picked take her place.
now, there’d be two possibilities in this hypothetical future:
A.) the tribe had matured enough to live without glory, even if everyone alike is downput by their queen’s unfateful demise. however, they’d learn what she taught them during her rule and learn to thrive in future generations with new, well-picked rainwing queens.
B.) the tribe would have grown to rely so much on glory and her wisdom during her queenship that the rainwings would be unsure what to do with themselves, and the new rainwing queen would be nearly unable to form together and keep in place this confused, helpless tribe wishing to have glory back.
now, i dont know about you, but the second option seems more interesting, so lets explore it.
a lot of questions would be posed: would they lose the progress they had made, or just fail to advance further without glory? what would the pressure of keeping the tribe together do to the rainwing queen? would she be able to pick a new, responsible queen for when she retires?
there’s also the possibility that other tribes could help with the reform of the rainwings- we can only guess that nightwings and rainwings would be close allies, what would they do in response to their ally suddenly going into chaos at the death of someone who had held them together for decades?
anyway, feel free to expand on this thought. just a hypothetical idea for the future of the rainwings.
