Fjord: Normal guy, joined the Navy to pay for college. His ship got attacked by something not of this world, launching him into the magical world.
Beau: Rich magical crime lord family. She found the Order of the Cobalt Soul, an organization founded to use knowledge to maintain balance between magical and mundane.
Caleb: Came from a long line of magically inclined humans who understood the magic world. Was recruited as a teenager to be a member of a government run task force of powerful mages that were meant to keep the peace between the two worlds, not knowing how corrupt they really were.
Nott: Was a member of a goblin clan in the Faewild. When she ran away, she decided the mortal world would be a great place to hide. She’s been pretending to be a homeless girl ever since, but that went poorly when she was accidentally put into a Mental Health facility for the homeless, which is where she met Caleb.
Jester: Marion Lavorre is a Kardashian style famous person, who used a combination of magic and innate talent to become a bit of a cultural phenomenon. She wanted to shield Jester from the trials of living in the public eye, so she kept her hidden from the rest of the world. No one knows Marion has a daughter (although there are some Reddit conspiracy theories.)
Mollymauk: He woke up in a hospital after being in a coma with no recollection of his past, the doctors telling him they had also never been able to figure out his identity. The person in the bed next to his was Gustav Fletching, who took pity on Molly and invited him to join the Carnival of Curiosities, a traveling band of monster hunters that used the circus as a cover.
Yasha: Used to live in a small, southern, Evangelical town. Her wife was the victim of a hate crime, and she had to flee the town. The Carnival of Curiosities were in town and they helped her escape. Coming from such a religious upbringing, she prayed to whomever would listen to help her get vengeance, but one of the Old Gods was the one to answer her prayer.
Caduceus: Grew up and lived in the Faewild. He’s never been to the mortal realm before, and thinks it’s all very nice. The M9 needed a healer, and he wanted to see more of the world.
